Re: 55022 Royal Scots Grey The Capital Deltic 12/6/10- (; plus)
... and at Langley (a little behind, at approx. 09:58), at speed on the Up Fast. [ Train was 'tailed' by a 57 ; 57601, I think.]
(Apologies for the overhead 'knitting'.) ...Plus, a couple of minutes earlier :
An unexpected, and unidentified, Class 66-bookended, Down charter of Mark 1's, 'tailed' by 66164, and whose speed suggested it was about to call at Stevenage.

G'Day Gents
Any idea why they seem to always top and tail loco hauled trains these days, are cl 66's prone to giving up half way or are they underpowered!! even a 'baby deltic' could haul that load????........unassisted

Re: 55022 Royal Scots Grey The Capital Deltic 12/6/10
i would suspect it is easier if a reversel is needed as it would not block a junction up or if its a terminus station where only dmus are used and the facilitys are not there to run the loco round.manna wrote:G'Day Gents

Re: 55022 Royal Scots Grey The Capital Deltic 12/6/10
..additionally, I suspect that, in today's rail industry in which spare loco crew are far less prevalent than the old days, and where if 'someone' causes delays to 'someone' else's trains, the accountants have to end up negotiating the level of penalty payments, should 'the' (principal) loco fail seriously or completely, the 'banker' (oops! ) is seen as a way of getting the train moving somewhere out of the way more quickly (if perhaps rather slowly) than waiting a possibly considerable time for an assisting loco from elsewhere.
