It seems like no one took any notice of the J21 at Shildon?

Many thanks Mr B for posting the photo of A3 Shotover at Saltburn. In an earlier post you mentioned the turntable at Carlin How was increased in size so that 9Fs could be turned on it. I know no 9Fs were ever allocated to Thornaby but a number of people over the years have told me that they did occasionally work trains to Skinningrove. I used to live at North Skelton until the summer of 1960 but I can't ever recall seeing one there. Does anyone know of any examples that were used and/or have any photos please?

Rather than 9fs would WDs have been used instead?

Plenty of 'willy dees' Bryan, along with Q6's and various J's, now and again you would see the odd Thompson K1 sloggin up the incline past Saltburn West with a load of iron ore wagons.

4472 is a beast. That is quite a crowd out to meet her. I know it won't happen, but I would love to see her single chimney and minus deflectore to release the grace of her lines.

Sorry to disagree BUT 9Fs were allocated to Thornaby and they did work to Skinny-these were ex Tyne Dock engines that because of a slack time were sent to work down here . I have even had a guard play war with me for running too fast on a York turn with a 9F He maybe should have sat in his tow rope and got a better ride like the Aberdeen men did on the fish trains. We couldn't have swingers behind 'cos we were loose coupled.

When I stated in a previous post that no 9Fs were ever allocated to Thornaby I did so after referring to a recent book called Shed by Shed (part 3 North Eastern) by Tony Walmsley which lists every steam loco located to sheds 50A to 56G from 1950 to 1968. In this book there are no 9Fs listed at 51L. However in the Railway Observer for April 1959 it states that Thornaby shed has now acquired four 9Fs from Tyne Dock, 92061/2/6/99. Presumably these were the ones that JB said had worked to Skinningrove.

In an earlier post Mr B you mentioned that you have a photo of a Jubilee 45594 Bhopal taken at Saltburn on Whit Monday 1961. I'd be grateful if you could post this photo (any any similar ones please) as I'm very interested in the locos (especially rarer visitors) that appeared at Redcar and Saltburn in the 1950s and 1960s. Needless to say I didn't take any photos myself at the time as I was only a child.

LMS engines on excursions to Saltburn:- I forget the date but 5P4Fs "Crabs" sometimes worked excursions, I have observed this when being at Thornaby shed watching the Crab work by and listening to the comments of 1936 men who had been made redundant(that is senior passed firemen aged 50 plus) complaining of men from other sheds working past their doorstep-this would be about the time the 9Fs were at Thornaby.JB.

The Tyne Dock 9Fs were often loaned out to other NE sheds when things were quiet in the steel industry and were quite common on Teesside. They also appeared in York and in Edinburgh -on freight workings while on loan to Heaton over the years. One interesting 9F working was the ICI Dri-Kold (dry ice containers) train C16.45 from Haverton Hill in around 1959. For a spell this train had a Saltley 21A 9F from Billingham and also appeared with LMS Class 5s. In earlier years it was often a York B16.
