...or, given the Scottish nature of the exercise, Haymarket's Driver Jimmy Swann.
His work, especially on the A4 hauled Elizabethan, being regularly commended by the likes of Cecil J Allen.
FWIW, latterday assessments of Bill Hoole's driving (even in these columns) suggest that he was often quite irresponsible...
Cheers

On the notable drivers theme, what about "Toram Beg", ( Haymarket driver Norman McKillop's pen name, for the benefit of those who have not heard of him; his books are well worth reading).

Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
Since we're all pals wi ol Big ears, it has been suggested 'Prince Charles'
but to fall in line with the Scots/historical theme thats 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'
who was also known as 'The Young Pretender' which is fitting.
'the Black Douglas' is a top name but sits at odds with a Green Loco
' Ben Nevis ' perhaps
i do like the idea of 'Torram Beag' though he was no fan of the P2, this translates i believe as 'Wee Norman' which is nicely Ironic.
on the contemporary aircraft/ wind theme theres 'Chinook'. i thought 'Nimrod' was nice too
But since theres also a German connection 'Valkyrie' (steel breastplate, some nice silver wings on the smoke deflectors
a bit of Gallic flair 'Chapeleon'
I also like 'Everest'(big, british achievement), 'Excaliber'(nice bit o steel) 'Volcano' (Rhymes with...) 'Vulcan'(its logical captain)

I'll second that - he's a top fellow. Met him through one of my university friend's father (clare gee), he's a mine of information and absolutely charming. His advice on colour schemes and liveries is something I will never forget - changed my outlook on "correct shades" forever.60129 GUY MANNERING wrote:Only one name for me :-

Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
Since my last post i have seen one name on the lists i like LAST MINSTREL from a work by Scott The Lay of the Last Minstrel. This is a name that has bits of everything about pacifics, theres a Scottish connection, a connection with an A2 TUDOR MINSTREL that was a racehorse like a lot of Gresleys products but hopefully it wont be last in the line of reproductions.
Anyway lets also hear it for the other groups that are trying to recreate lost locos especially of LNER types such as the G5 and the F4 and not forget other groups trying to restore LNER products back to working order. Take a bow Autocar on behalf of the trust.

While many of the names put forward mean something to railway enthusiasts, if the new P2 is to resonate with the over-the-top television people and get the public attention that 'Tornado' got, then the name has to be really really memorable to the whole world. Naming it 'Ant & Dec' would get the desired result as would 'Big Brother' and 'X-Factor'. But you see what I'm getting at.
'Cock 'O the North' has it! It's slightly rude and its outstandingly unforgettable. People will even find the loco in railway history books. But if one cannot use the original name, it still needs to be Cock of something, (cock being the biggest or the best when I was in school).

There was a Class 87 leccie named 'Cock 'O the North' and it is a splendid name, certainly. BTW, seems one of the 87s was to be named 'Royal Bank of Scotland' in far away, more trusting, times. My choice, however, would have to be 'Elizabeth of Glamis'.
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!
Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
"Sir Ralf Wedgwood"
Why?
Because the name itself has a fascinating history:-
- A4 class No. 4469 "Gadwall" was renamed "Sir Ralph Wedgwood" in 1939 after the chief officer who had served LNER for 16 years.
- But on 29th April 1942, 4469 "Sir Ralph Wedgwood" was severely damaged by bomb blast during an air raid in York.
- The name however lived on... With No. 4466 "Herring Gull" being renamed "Sir Ralph Wedgwood"
in 1944, in honour of not just the man but also in some ways No. 4469 aswell...
- And so No. 4466 "Sir Ralph Wedgwood" continued to give staling service right up to its withdrawal in 1965...
That to me is quite a remarkable story of a name. I think it would be marvellous if the P2 was named "Sir Ralph Wedgwood", allowing a Gresley locomotive named "Sir Ralph Wedgwood" to exist once more. And also allowing the remarkable story of the name itself to continue.
Plus "Sir Ralph Wedgwood" sounds like a great name to me!
Note: I know the name on both occasions was worn by a A4 but I'm sure it wouldn't look out of place on a P2.
Oh... Did I mention "Sir Ralph Wedgwood"...
