Simple answer to your question ...NObooklad wrote:mr b
where was the ECS of excursions temporarily stored and where were locos turned? saltburn looks the obvious option, but would big locos be able to fit on its 50'0" turntable?

Big engines went round the angles up the branch towards Brotton and the coaching stock Jubilee carriage Sidings or even Upleatham. If the boxes were closed then there was in latter days a big table at Carlin How.JB

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
My model railway is loosly based on the working practice of Redcar Station in the early days when only one platform was used for up and down trains. When I was a fireman on that branch the drivers used to talk about the practice of some of the Saltburn drivers coming from Saltburn to Redcar running slow and allowing the train for Saltburn to get clear of the station thus allowing them to coast into the station without dragging brakes-also if they had to have a standing start once they got the board allowing them into the platform by the time they did get in and stopped they were running late! This is ofcourse Westinghouse Brake days. I do have a photo from a book shewing an NER loco drawing out of the station in the Middlesbrough direction .I hope I am alright in using one of Mr Hooles photos from his book Railways of Teesside.

Hi, JB, O' the good old days ! the building in the photo below as you'll know used to be Redcar loco shed, in the way back 'good' old days long before the railway reached Saltburn, now the building is occupired by the window/conseratory and fitted carpet firms. I'd forgotton about Upleatham sidings (near Green Lane) usualy full of mineral or hopper wagons. There used to be one mad shifting session to clear the sidings to accept holiday traffic. JB, can you recall the site of the water crane at Redcar, as I'm modeling the area around Central station and church lane crossing 1950's-mid 1970's9 moddelers licence!). I was lead to belive there was no watering facility's?

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Does anyone have or know of the existance of photos of pacific tender locos in the Redcar/Saltburn area? I gather they used appear regularly (especially the Neville Hill ones) but they seem to have been camera shy. The only photos I've seen of them east of Middlesbrough station have been of 60019 Bittern at Redcar in July1961 and 60036 at Brotton (light engine) on Whit Monday 1953.

Wasn't there a water column at the excursion platform area? We never ever got water at Redcar (always having a big engine) T2 WD J39 etc so we didn't need topping up, we would even go York and back with a WD and not get water. Will look through my old paperwork and do my best for you.
Jim.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Thanks for that JB, heres a poor newspaper clip from my scrapbook, its the turntable at Carlin How ( Skiningrove Works ) it was built under the 1950's modernization along with Thornaby (51L), they thought they would be getting a shed full of 9F's!, that did not come off. We would see willy dees, J's and Q6's heading back from Carlin How tender first long after they built the turntable.
Kenny..regular A3's into Saltburn , 60081 Shotover (will post photo), also, Victor Wild, Nell Gow, Trigo, The Tetrarch, remember that Darlington usualy had A3's as standby pilots. Not forgetting 'Flying Scotsman' in the later days (1970's/1980's), would the A4 have been working the 'Tees Thames' ? I oftern got jibbed about it because I'd missed it that morning.
Mr B
Should read..."Heres a picture taken by local railwayman, Mr. R. S(very blured!), of the new turntable at Carlin How railway yard." It also has July 5 wrote in biro could this be newspaper date or official now in use date ? Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Thanks your your reply Mr B. The photo that I've seen of A4 60019 Bittern at Redcar was taken on Sunday 30th July 1961 and it was working the 11.5 am Saltburn - King's X. In TI for Sept 61 it states that this was the first A4 seen at Saltburn for many months. What was the previous visit of an A4 to Saltburn I wonder (60002 in September 1957 perhaps?). The photo of 60019 at Redcar is/was available on the Mid-Hants web site (Topical correspondence page) though I was unable to access it today.
Do you know the loco numbers of the LM & BR 5MTs at Saltburn that you posted Mr B and the date(s) they were taken please? I would guess they were taken on Whit Monday 1958, 1959 or 1960.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Cheers booklad, its a shame they pulled Thoraby station down it was built to verry high architectual standards especialy for its simple role in life.
Kenny, did'nt keep numbers sorry, kept them in the head! have a photo of Jubbilee 'Bohpal'(?) on Saltburn shed Whit Mon 1961, so the 5's could be 1960, the A4 on 'Tees Thames' be 1960? not long before EE type 4's took over, was usualy V2, I kick myself now for not photo-ing first deisels+DMU's.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Page 60 perhaps Booklad ? Any way visited Shildon - Locomotion today (Saturday) and was verry shocked to see our beloved J21 in its present condition, in the eyes of a classic car enthusiast you would describe it as " a basket job !" , on this ocasion yours trully forgot to take his camera!!! Perhaps other forum readers could post a picture?
