NER Stores van

Post by Bryan »

The NER stores van from the NRM is to move to Pickering on the NYMR in early June.
However it is in unrestored state or in need of work doing to it.
I would just like to ask what are the possible correct liveries that would have been carried by this vehicle?

In LNER and then BR(NE) days ours at Newport Middlesbrough was always black. An ordinary non descript vacuum braked box wagon. Would arrive behind the passenger train at Middlesbrough AM and be collected either by the shed cat or any L/E going to the shed and on a tea time taken to Middlesbrough station again by the shed cat (usually 5860 the worst steaming P3 in the area) I have even taken the van to the station using a (Humpy Tanky) T1 4-8-0T. and placing it in the station middle road waiting for a service back to Darlington.

As for the livery, IIRC NER un-fitted revenue wagons were painted grey or departmental black if fitted. However, engineering wagons were Oxford blue.

Many years ago at Gateshead we had a turn called the stores pilot which spent a lot of time on Chaytors Bank. Parked up there was an old coach fitted out with bunks, kitchen and messing area and a large storage area. I was told that this was the old stores van which used to tour all the outstations hauled by a tank engine with station stores. The crew, including the driver and fireman, would stay in the van through the week returning home after dispensing there wares to places such as Waskerley and Allendale etc. Why didn't I photograph these things!!

I have an interest in NER stores vans for an as yet incomplete LNER (ex NER) stores train modelling project (as per photo in Peter Tatlows excellent book). I was allowed access to bogie van at Beamish last year to measure/photograhph it, I had a very close look at the peeling paint and could only find red oxide and black, I am a bit undecided on livery I will use for LNER period but I am leaning away from oxford blue as the vans were not engineering stock? I also visited Shildon, but only viewed and photographed the NRM van from a distance.

Not sure what you are saying are there two stores van in existence? The only one I have seen in pictures is in a very faded pale blue colour I believe its at Shildon.
Do you have any pictures/drawings of the Dia H5 6 wheel van as I would like to scratchbuild one to go with my two bogie vans. There is a good picture of one end the latest Tatlow volume but I havent found one of the other end. Also anything on the H1 version?

Tatlow in the original Wagon Volume states Oxford Blue for service vehicles i.e stores vans and engineers wagons.

Yes there are 2 NER bogie stores vans in existence, one at Shildon and one at Beamish and from memory I think they are different types.

I dont know of any 'official' drawings of stores vans but I hav'nt got round to checking with the NRM search engine or NERA and the Ken Hoole archive. When drawings are not available I tend to develop simple line drawings from photographs.

I always thought the pictures I had seen were the same vehicle. A search has revealed Dia H2 5523 at Beamish . A H3 is at Shildon with the number 041273 not shown in the Tatlow chapter so no idea of original number. Both are in poor condition the one at Shildon according to the site is to be restored inc the original Birdcage lookout.

thanks for the info

The Stores Van at Beamish is NER 5523. It had a central 'birdcage' lookout (IIRC most of the parts are inside). But it has arson damage at one end.
It is due to be restored by LCLT

Found this on the NYMR forum.
Looks like it has arrived at Newbridge NYMR.

2 photos of the van taken today at Newbridge.
Number painted on is 041273, original plates removed.
I do not know if this is the original number or a later departmental number.
Interior is empty except for general rubbish and a long fitted bench.
What the prospects are for this I do not know at the moment other than it is destined for a display at Pickering station.
Needs a bit of work with the wood filler and paint brush first.

Any further information anyone can supply would be welcomed.
What appropriate liveries etc.
