Hello to all LNER locomotive forum member's. W10000 or 'Hush hush' as she was also known as when it comes to her livery and was she painted in LNER Apple green?. I only thought that i saw a picture of her in LNER Apple green in one of thoughs 'Colour rail slides' that some of you good people may know of i wouldn't swear my life on it and if i did it certainly wasn't recently i'm talking several years ago. To be honest as much as i like GNR/LNER locomotives i'm more into the signalling side of the both companies. Micky

"The W1 departed from standard LNER livery practice. In its original form, it was painted dark battleship grey with steel clothing bands. The number, 10000, was painted on the cab sides with 12in white numbers and 1.25in black shading. The bufferbeam was also grey with shaded white lettering.

After rebuilding, No. 10000 was painted in the standard A4 garter blue livery. The wartime black 'NE' livery was applied in April 1942, but reverted back to garter blue in December 1946. British Railways applied a white lined darker blue livery in January 1951, and the standard BR green with orange and black lining livering in May 1952. "

Customers always specified grey livery. Doesn't mean anything significant of course but maybe everyone went off the notes in 'Locos of the LNER Part 6C'... "This striking livery (battleship grey with steel clothing bands)was retained throughot No. 10000's life with high pressure boiler".

I hope that the attached notes will help with the detail. Battleship Grey was specific shade with an Admiralty reference. We have to assume now that this was the colour used.

Many thanks for posting the link to her being turned. I've seen this on TV on various programmes over the years.

You might want to check on the following listing I just came across on Ebay which shows 10000 in green. It's still open to the possibility of artistic license being applied to colourizing a photo, but it's intriguing nevertheless.

Always grey as stated above. The Grey shade appears to vary through its life from dark to light Grey. There is excellent photos in Tony Wrights new book LNER Pacifics the build was also in the BRM Magazine

Taken this one from our facebook site Railways of Berwick and the Eastern Borders it was found in a commercial photographers premises. Its just to the south of Tweedmouth shed before Spital crossing with an Edinburgh Newcastle relief sometime between 1931 - 35.
