NER signalling help

Post by 52D »

I am interested in the signal shown, I cant remember one in this particular position. Is it an example of an NER slotted post signal? Any help gratefully recieved. Im sorry about the size of the image.

If there are 'three weight bars' lower down the signal post instead of one then it is a slotted signal. It's the same mechanical mechanism as a normal home signal with a distant signal below it. When i was 12 years old back in 1969 i made a workable home and distant signal and mounted them both on a home made white wooden signal post that stood about 4ft high from the ground at the end of our garden which was about 50ft away from my lever frame. Following the drawing in the Ian Allan book of British Railway signalling (my copy was bought in 1968) which showed the 'three weight bars arrangement' i managed to make the slotting-arrangement work as shown in the book. When i pulled the home signal lever the home signal would clear. When i pulled the distant signal lever the distant signal would clear. When i replaced the home signal lever 'both signal arms would return to the on position' while the distant signal lever was still reversed!. It was the same drawing for a single home signal that was slotted between two signal boxes and showed 'three weight bars' further down the signal post. Micky GNR/NER/LNER all the way...

Hi 52D, i didn't really answer your question on if that particular signal was a 'slotted signal' but i hope it was some help on how the 'slotting arrangement' works although it's easier to draw or show a picture of how it works rather than to explain on a message board. Micky GNR/NER/LNER all the way...

Hi 52D I believe your photo was taken on Crimple viaduct. If I remember rightly it was an NER slotted post lattice signal probably made by Stevens & Co. but it only had one arm so it wasn't slotted.

I think that you were asking about SLOTTED POSTS rather than slotting mechanisms, 52D. Still just to round out this thread a bit it is just possible to make a working slot mechanism in 7mm.

This is a GCR lower quadrant signal that I made with a timber post (beech). When I first tried out the slot mechanism it worked as it should. I then realised that the GCR used oval balance weights so I filed them to that shape (they had been circular) And that was just enough to stop the mechanism from working properly. I should have left well alone!

That is location of the original large size pic of the signal on the Royal Border Bridge, that could be the viewpoint for Terence Cuneos painting of a V2 for a BR poster. Seen here

I was going to say it could not be Crimple viaduct as that is straight from end to end.
I was going to suggest Arthington then saw the facebook link.

Sounds like fun, Micky.

I built a somersault too! Mine is a bit smaller - 1:43.

As you can see it also doesn't clear to the vertical position that some of the drawings show. However a trawl through the available pics shows that the real signals rarely, if ever achieved it either. I have seen at least one pic that shows a somersault barely managing 45 degrees.
