Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
The 101s were fitted with reverse, it was a small removable brass key which fitted in beside the gear selector. Motormen drove electrics. Now that I think about it I have never seen anything that wasn't fitted with reverse running on the railway.
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
The picture says it all! Late 1950's (59?) nice new Met Cam no silly little vulgar stripes or daft yellow pannels no overhead stickers, railway workers them days had common sense, eyes open on the four foot, and the six foot's better from ten foot!
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Info re the Gresley V3s. 51A only ever had two - 67682 (12/61-9/63) and 67690 (10/64-11/64). 67682 also noted occasionally on station pilot duties.
All six L1s based at 51A were withdrawn 12/61, their main replacements were ex-LMS 4MT 2-6-4 tanks.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
The Darlington L1s were not withdrawn 12/61, but were transferrred away W/e 25/11/61 to the West Riding - 56 B & F as replacements for J50s - to be replaced by LMS designs at 51A. The L1s were not a noticeable success in the West Riding and there were one or two 'run aways' reported. The last were withdrawn 12/62.
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
apologies Stembok for that error re L1s. I misread my allocation list.
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
re mr B's post on 6 may 2010. D49 in the photo is 62753 The Belvoir, allocated to starbeck for all of the 1950s until its withdrawal in august 1959. that, plus the EP headlamps, makes the working the afternoon darlington-leeds as opposed to a local one.

Wellcome to South Bank ... Localy known asSLAGGY ISLAND ...
Station staff pose for the 'official' photograph... On a Saltburn-Darlington local class A8 69870 stops at 'Slaggy', a quiet station, comming alive morning and evening with both steel workers and ship yard workers in their hundreds comming and going to work. In this 1970's shot class 101 on a Bishop Auckland-Saltburn service enters South Bank, the disused iron ore handling plant in the background was once part of the Cargo Fleet Iron Works complex, the works closed around this period, main steel workings was transfered to Lacenby and Redcar. The preserved Sunbeam trolly,ex Teesside Railless Traction Board at Kirkleatham Showground, Redcar August 1995. Teesside was the last trolly system in the UK, whilst other corporations where ripping out the wires, Teesside was building a new route through Eston via the new housing complex at Whale Hill. Several second hand trollys arrived on teesside some where to big for the intended route, whilst others needed converting to suit the voltageRe: Darlington Saltburn branch
nice shot of 69870 at south bank. here's an older eaglescliffe one.
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
I thought that honour was Bradfords with the trolleys being withdrawn in 1972 and most of the surviving fleet being acquired for preservation at Sandtoft near Doncaster.Teesside was the last trolly system in the UK,

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
The Teesside Trolleybuses were the penultimate system closing in 1971. Bradford hung on until at least 1972. Here is a shot of a North Ormseby bound Trolley heading alongside South Bank Works in the Teesside Municipal Transport livery of puky turquoise!
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Nice to see the re-bodied Roe en route to 'Doggie' passing Cleveland works. keep them pictures comming, when re-routing the wires through Eston it was also planned to extend the route to Redcar and beyond but the United Automobile Co strongly opposed and the plans where scrapped. Hence the reason to purchase the used six wheelers from other corporations.
