Surely to go with 60163 Tornado it has to be :- Hurricane.
I know there was a GWR Castle named after the plane, but this would fittingly be a Proper Hurricane for a Proper Steam Locomotive.
Regards.

Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
This is a topic that could run and run, and we don't even know if a name with Scottish connotations might be appropriate. However here are a few such suggestions:
Sir Walter Scott ( used on A1 60143)
Sir William Burrell ( the Burrell Collection, Glasgow)
Sir Alex Ferguson ( that one at least should guarantee a following)
Sir Robert Watson-Watt ( inventor of radar)
David Livingstone ( African explorer, might be appropriate)
Rob Roy ( one of the best Scott related names IMHO )
Robert Louis Stevenson ( author)
Lord Kelvin ( famous scientist)

You put some effort into that list of names Flamingo. Please not sir Alex Ferguson thanks and Rob Roy was once used on a GWR Saint class locomotive back in the early 1900s not to say it can't be used again. Micky

We've had suggestions of William Wallace and Rob Roy - perhaps they should be balanced with an Edward I

Edward Longshanks mmm dont think the Scots will be to chuffed about that so how about the Duke of Cumberland or as he was known to the Scots & Irish butcher Cumberland, may as well make a job of it.
Wasnt the locomotive with the name W.P.Allen not to be used North of the border ?

Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
Edward Longshanks was invited into Scotland by the Scots for a couple of years or so! I'd have to look it up, but their heir was a child so they wanted someone to act a bit like a Regent for a few years. His reputation was already well known - he'd just finished with North Wales, so it was a bit like asking the Eastern Counties Railway asking George Hudson to run their railway for them...
I think a strongly Scottish name is good (especially from that area of Scotland), but some UK unity is required - especially as the A1 Trust is based south of the border.

Pardon my ignorance, who he?
Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
Absolutely. If not, then the aforementioned bird/racehorse names could well be a viable bet - after all, the LNER had a long held tradition of naming their locomotives accordingly, and I'm certain no one would mind if decent racehorse with a memorable name was chosen.richard wrote:I think a strongly Scottish name is good (especially from that area of Scotland), but some UK unity is required - especially as the A1 Trust is based south of the border.

Just not Shergar!

As a slight variation on Richards original suggestion.
Could I dare to suggest a definitive Scottish name that is known worldwide?
"Monster of Ness"

Border Reiver seems most appropriate to me, neither exclusively English or Scottish.
No boring regiments please.

I don't think anyone's mentioned "Waverley" yet? That has to be a classic Borders/Scottish name and has a Sir Walter Scott connection.

G'Day Gents
I would vote for a Scottish racehorse name, whatever it maybe.

How about 'Arbroath Smokie'??richard wrote:I suspect (as with Tornado), the name would be chosen by a sponsor, I just hope that sponsor is a prominent one along the Edinburgh-Aberdeen route so we get something appropriate!
