Recommended reading.....
Can I take this opportunity to recommend Harry Knox's book "Steam Days at Haymarket". In addition to the quality of the writing and richness of the anecdotes included within, the photographs, mainly provided via the Transport Treasury are well chosen and of excellent quality. It is not cheap at £17.95 but worth double the money in my view.
And, before you ask, I am not connected in any way to either the author or publisher.

Looks to be plenty reading in it rather than just stuffed with photographs which a lot of transport books are these days.

There's a lot of really good stuff in this book, on Haymarket depot, the people who worked there, engines and diagrams. As well as what it was like to work at a premier main line steam depot. Very well worth buying/ reading. Highly recommended. All usual disclaimers included.

I have read this book at least 3 times cover to cover and it is definitely one of my bathroom stable of reading material i also find it quite useful for snippets of information.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Only omission was an illustration of 61246...the sole B1 that I've never seen pictured!

You can buy copies of photographs in their collections.

Have been aware of 61246 in their collection for some while.
Loathe to buy the picture because:
a) I've been 'stung' on buying rail pictures before.
b) My tightness makes Scrooge look like a philanthropist.
61246 was a Tweedmouth loco, before moving to St. Margarets...
Wonder if 52D has a pic of it hauling some of his wagons?

Although Tweedmouth had more than a few B1s. I cant find this one among them. In the none antelope named series we had 61241 Viscount Ridley.
61246 Lord Balfour of Burleigh appears to have been shedded at Doncaster 1948 & 1952 and transferring to St Margarets sometime between 1952 & 1955 finally being withdrawn in December 1962.
Although it is possibile it could have been on loan to Tweedmouth as we have had a similar situation when 61116 was photographed off the rails at Duns on a Tweedmouth working when she should have been at either Neasden or Eastfield.
Bill Jamieson may know more when he next looks in.

Just back from holiday hence the delay! 61246 certainly isn't a loco I associate with Tweedmouth although if it had been allocated there at some point between 1952 and 1955, that was a bit before my time. No doubt it would have visited from 64A during its time there. My only sighting was of it piloting a Glasgow bound express through Larbert in about 1958/9.

Clearly, I was in error when nominating 61246 at Tweedmouth.
Seems that St Margaret's was the regular Scottish base.
Rather surprisingly, would expect to see it pictured within the many Waverley Route books...
Other Edinburgh B1's often shown on such workings.

The list compiled by Kenneth Gray of locos which have worked through Hawick does indeed include 61246 (as one would expect) but neither his photo collection nor that of the late Robin Barbour (who also hailed from Hawick) includes a shot of 61246 on the Waverley Line (or anywhere else for that matter).
To get back to the original thread, I understand from a friend who is acquainted with Harry Knox that a follow-up volume on Haymarket is in preparation but I have no idea of the timescale for its publication. Another book complementing "Steam Days at Haymarket" is "Wonderful Waverley", also published by Irwell Press, but presumably now only available secondhand as it dates back to 2001.
