Re: Ferryhill Station
According to the Signalling Record Society the present Ferryhill box was commissioned in 1950 so I would imagine Ferryhill Sidings box was closed then. There's a nice colour photo of a Q7 at Ferryhill yard in this months "Heritage Railway" magazine and there was an excellent article about being a signalman at Ferryhill in - Backtrack I think - a few years ago.I think I still have it.

Re: Ferryhill Station
The article mentioned was in Steam Days issue 151 March 2002 and was the recollections of a signalman at Ferryhill in the 1950s and he gives the date of the sidings box closure as 1954.
Re: Ferryhill Station
Thamks for that info, I thought I hadn't seen that box.
Re: Ferryhill Station
I thought it might be worth mentioning here that in the Malton Railwayana Auction on 9th January Lots 430 - 539 are from the collection of the late C. Wolstenhomes and include several signalbox diagrams including "MERRINGTON LANE" from the Sedgefield line and "DURHAM NORTH" and "DURHAM SOUTH".
Re: Ferryhill Station
Just joined LNER forums. I wrote that Steam Days article. Comments on photos and other issues to follow in due course.
Re: Ferryhill Station
Nice shot of Ferryhill No2 box and the sidings complex, view looking south.
Re: Ferryhill Station
Didn't look at all like that when I went through on Monday
Re: Ferryhill Station
Some brief comments on photos:
The Sidings box closed on 12 December 1954. The new No 2 box (opened 13 December 1953) assumed some of its functions, the others transferring to No 1 box which had its frame extended as a consequence.
No 1 box in 1968. The signal next to the stairs was No 44, controlling exit from the Old Yard as it was known.
62044 in 1967. Allocated to 51C at the time. K1s were by then the usual motive power on the Coxhoe WH dolomite working, superseding Q6s.
D6775 on 28 February 1967. Most probably loaded minerals from East Hetton returning to Ferryhill Yard before heading to Teeeside.
The view of the entire layout south of Bridge No 155 is the clearest I've seen so far and is much appreciated. The Yards were a hive of activity until the decline of the coalfield and local goods traffic circa 1965/66. The track far right, ECML Down Fast, had a 90mph speed limit, fully utilised by express workings. Station platforms visible were numbered (r-l) 1, 6 unused and trackless, 5 and 4. Platform 5 was the bay used by Stockton originators until March 1952. Middle distance in the photo is No 3 box and, to its left near the pit-heap, Mainsforth box.
Station view in NER days. This is 1893 or before, with the old No 1 box in the distance which faced the opposite way to the one I worked in.
Can someone explain the presence of 4472 on 28 February 1968 please?

Re: Ferryhill Station
From memory I believe it was a running in/practice run in preparation for the non stop run between Kings Cross and Edinburg on the 1st May 1968. My mate's uncle was a driver at Darlington and we got word through him.

Re: Ferryhill Station
I have scanned this photo of Sir Nigel Gresley in Ferryhill Yard but cannot put a date or reason to it. I think it's from the mid seventies and perhaps its working to or from its old Philadelphia base. Help!
