W1 10000

I've attaced an old BR photo from my collection of her leaving Kings Cross on the Flying Scotsman. Was she Apple Green or another livery does anyone know.

Officially "battleship grey" or BS "dark admiralty grey", or so I understand. For part of the argument about the actual shade of grey read Nick Dunhill's article on building an O gauge model of this loco in May edition of British Railway Modelling.

G'Day Gents
The picture say's 'the Flying Scotsman departing Kings Cross' but with the tunnels behind the engine and York Rd to the right I would say that the 'Flying Scotsman' is arriving at Kings Cross, Good pic though, have'nt seen that one of 10000 :lol:

Post cards in both colours as the Hush Hush or as it was known at Gateshead the"Flying Sausage".

You've just made my day! I swore blind I'd seen the W1 in apple green somewhere - thought I was going mad...and I'm not! (Well, not entirely). Now I know where I saw it! :D

Can we rely on that picture as proof the loco itself ever ran in green?

I've think i've seen her in 'Appel green' on thoughs 'Colour-rail picture slides' that specialise in railway colour photography from the 1920s through to the end of BR steam in '68. There's also several seconds of black & white film of Hush-hush going south through Welwyn Garden City pulling a dynamometer-car, apparently the film crew caught her passing by chance or so the film commentary says?. Thanks indeed for the info. The Kings X photo might just explain this photo of Sir Nigel with the loco crews again at Kings Cross prior to departure but the clock is reading 6.25.
I've also put on this shot from my collection of her on the Kings Cross turntable being filmed I believe for Movietone.

From study of the trackwork, I would think she's approaching platform 2.

And the first coloured postcard looks very much like it's depicting her on a Down train passing Greenwood.

When ever W10000 or 'Hush hush' has been mentioned down the years i always think of Henry Fowler's 'Fury' of the LMS aswell both dating from 1929?. Micky

6399 'Fury' high pressure loco 1929 was built by NBLC Glasgow, while Henry Fowler was CME of the LMSR . William Stanier did not become CME of the LMS until 1932. Stanier later used parts of 6399 (1935) as the prototype for his rebuilt Royal Scot class.

An original photograph (rather than a coloured postcard) of her in apple green whilst in an unrebuilt state would be very interesting to see. All the books talk of her only being in grey.

I think the green livery may be artistic licence rather than the loco actually having ever carried it.
