Ex. GNR coach assistance please....
I wonder if anyone can assist? I have found the GNR D218A corridor brake composite, built in 1911 and its number series. I also assume the number had 10000 added in the Thompson renumbering and I hope the coach lasted into BR. ???
It is the GNR D249B/D277B corridor third I cannot locate at all, let alone find a suitable BR running number.This coach was originally a composite. I am building both from etched parts.

The other Diagrams are not listed presumably not Gresley designs ??

I looked them both up in Harris's earlier Gresley Coaches book of 1973 and so the lack of information is what puzzled me. The 61' corridor compo was definitely a Gresley design of around 1917 I think, later downgraded to all-third when it was modified somewhat by the LNER. It is only when one needs to locate specific information that one finds some books gloss over things.
I looked them both up in Harris's earlier Gresley Coaches book of 1973 and so the lack of information is what puzzled me. Most of the standard Gresley vehicles were renumbered by Thompson in 1946/7 but not the pre-group vehicles which is why the GN diagrams are not included. The vehicles you quote would have been for example 2477 in GN, LNER 42477 and BR E42477E.

I've already numbered the Dia 218A G.N.R Brake Compo 61'6" as the last one built, No. E12712, but after what you have said it should probably be E2712 (?)

Diagram 249B was ex ECJS D.2B Nos 77/6 locker composite (2.5/4) comps built 1914 for the 'Flying Scotsman' 10' bogies. renumbered 176/7 post 1925. Transfered to SSA and GN sections respectively as 7 comp thirds with locker converted to compartment. Renumbered 3367 & 42515 respectively on transfer. Thanks very much Bill for this information. I will renumber the brake compo to E42712. The other coach is only part completed but it is good to know I now have a running number for it as E 42515 E.
I don't have photos of the real thng, just the model that was finally finished yesterday teatime. It took longer to fit all the small peices of glazing than it did any other part of the building and painting....

I agree with Bill over the ex ECJS Locker vehicle, but cannot trace 277B. I wonder if you have the correct Diagram No since 277B would have been an Third Brake (if it existed!). The GN Diagram book is a nightmare, so it could be a renumbering, but it would be unusual for them not to issue a new diagram - even the standard coaches continued to receive GN Diabams up until the late 20's.

Hi Nick, I didn't get any instruction sheets but D277B was written on the etching. Fortunately I did photograph the sides last week...

From the etches, it appears to be the same rebuilt ECJS D2B alias GN D249B. Originally a Compo Locker and rebuilt to a full third. There is no other ECJS dia which even nearly fits.
Incidentally I usually use the old Cavendish brass turned coach buffers which are quite generous in diameter filed top and bottom to give the oval shape. I am sure that these must still be available as they used to be used in the Kirk kits.

I had a look round for buffers when I built Bill's GNR Milk Van - the nearest I could find (I wanted sprung) were these LYR ones from Andrew Hartshorne (Wizard Models):
The oval heads are a separate etch which you attach. There are shots of it on pages 3 and 5 of my WB thread, but it's not easy to see the buffers - I can let you have a picture if you want.

Thanks jwealleans. Sprung buffers are a luxury with auto couplings and so at the moment I'm looking at an easier and cheaper way such as cast buffers.

The good thing about this great hobby is, not only do we never stop learning but we also never stop re-learning! I recently came across a photo in 'LNER in Transition' showing a teak coach with white roof and full yellow lining after Nationalisation. Yellow lining had been revived postwar and applied to Gresley corridor stock but not Thompson stock. I had forgotten I knew this back in the 1960s from pictures in 'Railway Carriage Album' by G.M.Kitchenside (IA 1966).
In the above album, there is a lovely shot by Eric Treacy showing 51' corridor brake third E62640 newly outshopped in fully lined teak, it running number at the left-hand end in BR Gil Sans font. GNoS non-corridor third E7412 is also fully lined, it running number at the right-hand end in LNER style font.
I've decided my final GNR coach will be fully lined out too.....A good excuse for a splash of LNER in a sea of BR carmine & cream.
