Middlesbrough August Bank Holiday Monday Bombing

I'll ask my grandad more detailed questions about M'boro next i see him. I know as part of the area S&T team (in digs in the 'boro area) he was called to attend the aftermath and has mentioned seeing part of the loco hanging down into the subway. Interestingly, though slightly off topic he has also mentioned a call out to Faverdale wagon works, after a raid, arriving to find a large hole in the apron and a UXB at the bottom. Certainly i remember the urban myth that the large ponds beside the black path behind Whessoe were as a result of misses. I've never come across any info relating to that so would be interested if anyone's research showed any info on that one too.

Not quite on topic but in issue 79, Saturday January 10th, Remember When there is a right up about the bombing of Middlesbrough. It is mainly one persons account of the bombings but there are some interesting photographs, especially the one of the station which is looking at Platform 2 and looks like it is taken from inside one of the coaches of the bombed train sitting in Platform 1.

All the info you need on downed German bombers can be found in an excellent book called Fallen or Broken Eagles I think, I have the book but not to hand at the moment as I am in Spain. Its an account in great detail of every single bomber shot down in the North East and every bombing sortie.

There is also a book available called "The North East Aviation Diary" that lists all incidents such as downed German planes and British losses of all types, and also some details of attacks on ground targets including trains etc. It is amazing how many planes came down, not just as a result of enemy action, but also training accidents, mechanical faults etc. There are very few days that do not have an incident recorded, and some days there were several planes lost.

I wonder if there are any memorials to downed allied bombers in Germany ? I know there are in the Low countries.
I believe there is a memorial stone to a downed German bomber and aircrew somehwere close to and under the High Level Bridge on the Newcastle side.

There was a rather sad story in connection with this bombing. A number of Gateshead men have told me that the fireman who was killed was not rostered for this turn on this day but had requested a swap for the day. Fate playing a cruel hand indeed!

Take a close look at the loco steam is still leaking from it.
