The Poll that was in the Suggestion Box. It has been up for just over a week:

viewtopic.php?t=452

Further up in this thread I did include a sentence along the lines of "Time for a poll". I guess I should have explicitly included a link after I created it, but it should have come up as the most recent thread in the Suggestion Box...

Okay, here is a provisional list. Feel free to make suggestions. Order is general size/power/prestige.

I've tried to balance out the constituent railways, so I've missed worthy engines such as the NBR C10/C11 but this is balanced by the D34 Glen. All are represented by a 4-6-0, 4-4-2, or 4-4-0. GNSR is the smallest railway represented - no H&BR or M&GN at the moment. I think the M&GN is a bit too "joint", but I'd welcome a good H&BR suggestion if anyone has one...

Posts, Company, Engine

0 NER Y7
10 GER J70
20 GNR J52
30 LNER J94
50 LNER N2
75 LNER L1 (Thompson)
100 NBR J36
125 GCR J11 'Pom-Pom'
150 NER J27
175 LNER J39
200 GNSR D40
250 NBR D34 'Glen'
300 GER D14 'Claud Hamilton'
400 GCR D11 'Improved Director'
500 LNER B1 (Thompson)
600 GNR C1
700 NER C7
800 LNER W1 or P2
900 LNER A3
1000 LNER A4

Any bias towards preserved classes is purely intentional :-)
(to be fair, the more noteworthy classes had a higher chance of being preserved)

Going up to 1000, should give you all something to aim for...

Richard,

A very interesting selection and one that will work.

Yes there are variables between all the classes and I note that the J52 has a tractive effort of 20,456 and this would nominally place it at position 8 on the list rather than third. That said one could go on sorting ad infinitum the merits and demerits of each locomotive and where it should appear on the list. I believe that the list as compiled is very representative and good.

The other interesting thing is that the W1 would have had the greatest TE of all at 41,437 but the improved A4's were much more glamorous, efficient and most importantly more reliable than the W1.

Yes I can think of a couple of H & B R contenders. The first is Stirling class "A" (LNER Q10) 0-8-0 heavy goods engine, (Designed to haul 780 ton trains) built by The Yorkshire Engine Company and originally fitted with Belpaire fireboxes.

They were an outstanding design for their time. Numbered by the H & B R 117 to 131. A few of these engines were loaned to the NER during and just after WW1. They were primarily designed to haul coal from the West Yorkshire collieries to the docks in Hull over the 1:100m east - west and the 1:150 west - east gradients of the old H & B R line. These engines were affectionately know by the name "Tinies" they were all withdrawn by the year 1931. They would fit in somewhere on the list around the J39 mark with a TE of 25,860.

The second engine worthy of consideration was the 1910 H & B R J class (LNER D24) 4-4-0. They did not have an illustrious history, there were only five of them built but they were the mainstay of the passenger services from Hull to Cudworth. These locomotives looked very smart in their "Invisible" green, (A fifty/fifty mixture of "Drop black" and the ubiquitous "Brunswick Green" - Yes, even back then) H & B R lined livery and Stirling domeless boilers.

They had a good solid timeless and very attractive style about them. The men on this railway always took great pride in turning their engines out well and polishing all the brass and copperwork. They would fit in somewhere on the list around the GNSR D40 and the GER D14 "Claud Hamiltons" as their tractive effort was 16,485.

Oh! Richard, would past posts count towards the tally or is it to be a fresh start?

Past posts will count. I think the only way to reset the counter is to delete everyone's posts!

Yes it isn't strict TE - otherwise the U1 would be at the top, and we can't have that!

Q10: I think I might go for this one because I realise that I've completely missed the heavy freight/mineral engines! So we should probably add a 2-8-0. The ROD O4 would be the obvious choice, I think. Perhaps delete the J11, and insert an O4 further down the list.

Another one I've missed: the V2. This could probably go just before A3, but after the 4-4-2s.

Very nice list there Richard, Certinly something for us all to aim for :) So does that mean that you would be a LNER B1 or do you get to to straight to the top  .

Give me a year :-)

Also if we insert a Q10 and a V2, that could push the highest ranking up a little...

Another gap are the Moguls. I could add a K3 or a K4.

Here's a modified list. I've added the H&BR Q10, and V2. The J11 has been removed, and replaced with an O4 further down the list. Not quite sure where to put the O4, so I've put it just before the B1. Putting it after the Q10, would have resulted in it preceding the 4-4-0s.

Richard,

Excellent list, 8) I am so glad you have included the V2 as well as the Q10.

You should be the first to reach an A4, then you can go back to GO and start towards gaining a second A4 in your stable

Oh what fun this is going to be

Cheers

We can now call you "Maude"! (J36)

The ranks are in place.

It looks like the default "Side Admin" rank trumps the automatic ones. I thought it might list them one above the other.

:-)

I can always delete the "Site Admin" rank, but it might be a useful indicator for new members.

Can you not use both have site admin above the locomotive class or will it not let you.
