LNER Pigeon Van in Post War livery

Post by Bulwell Hall »

Hi

I've only just found this site and this is my first posting so I hope I am not revisiting a topic already covered elsewhere.

I have a Chivers kit for the four wheel Pigeon Van and wish to finish it in LNER Post War livery but I am having difficulty in finding a definitive description of what the livery was as applied to these vehicles. I am uncertain whether they were painted Teak colour and lettered in carriage style characters or wether they were a darker brown and lettered in white in the style of a horsebox. A photograph of one at this period would be very helpfull but the only published ones I can find show the vans in BR crimson livery. Any help would be gratefully recieved! Thanks in anticipation.

I stand to be corrected, but I believe these were unlined teak with passenger lettering until they were repainted Crimson by BR.

There are a few on workbenches on the site - I've done both Crimson and teak and Mick B has done at least one teak one - so you can always have a look and decide what finish you prefer.

I've never seen one painted brown but that isn't to say it couldn't have happened.

If they were numbered in the carriage series they were teak, with black ends, if they were numbered in the NPCS series the were varnishe goods stock brown.

Thanks for that chaps - things are getting a little clearer! I assume that the vans will be finished in Teak colour rather than varnished teak with the grain pattern showing?

A photo would still be a great help if anybody has one.

They were in the carriage series (6xxx IIRC). I think the nearest you'll get to a photo is the one on the NNR which I think I've seen posted on another forum although there are some on here. Bear in mind that, lovely as it looks, it shouldn't be lined and the ends ought to be black.

As far as I am aware they were grained teak. Any exterior work carried out during the war might have eliminated any lining out (if it was there), and the coach simply revarnished.

Did they carry full corridor stock lining out before the war?

On the NPCS I saw in the early 1950's it was all-but impossible to determine the colour under the road dust. In other words, the grime colour we spray on chassis could also be applied to the whole coach and cleaned off where handling too place around door handles.

Non-corridor stock stopped being lined out in 1928 (or 1930, I forget which ). I think these were all built too late to have been lined.

Thanks for that, this is what I suspected. The preserved example at Sheringham is lined out for effect, but it certainly looks good as one would expect.
