Yes, I can set the number of posts. I haven't thought how I'll do it yet.
Probably have some small steps at the beginning - perhaps 5 posts or 10 posts for the first step up.

For named trains, then we don't have to do them all...

If we did every station on the ECML, we'd get some minor ones - Finsbury Park, Church Fenton (okay it has a junction), ete and these would be mixed up amongst the big names like York, Darlington, etc.

For the jobs, I think there are two main sequences we'd be interested in: the engine cleaner -> top link driver sequence, and the apprentice -> CME sequence.

I have written up a list of ECML stations and ideas of post numbers for them, what do you think?

64B Haymarket Shed 0
Edinburgh 10
Dunbar 20
Berwick-upon Tweed 40
Morpeth 60
Newcastle 80
Durham 100
Darlington 120
Nothallerton 140
York 160
Doncaster 180
Retford 200
Newark Northgate 225
Grantham 250
Little Bytham 300
Peterborough 350
Stevenage 400
London Kings Cross 500

The gaps between ranks get bigger as the number of posts increases.

I have included Little Bytham between Grantham and Peterborough as that is the location where Mallard reached her top speed on her record breaking run.

Ben,

A neat idea and would probably work well.

On a personal preference I would like to see locomotives in the mix.

What about working up through a dozen (the number suggested by RM)classes of locomotive all the way from a lowly shunter up to an A4

for example:

1. Y4
2. J63
3. A5
4. K4
5. J38
6. B17
7. B1
8. B16
9. V2
10. A3
11. A2
12. A4

Why not list sheds seperately?
E.G
1, Fort William
2, Annesley
3, Retford
4, Nottingham
5, Cricklewood
6, Neville Hill
7, Holbeck
8, Kings Cross Top Shed
9, Haymarket
10 St Margerts
The weather here is Baltic but so were the tank engines
Furness Railway and GCR fan.
125mph tilt vs 126.5mph duck
Advanced North West Productions.

Tom: I think sheds would be difficult to order.

Locomotive types could be ordered by prestige and/or power.

Ben's ECML stations is the best so far I think, because there is a simple order. Locomotives and employment grades might seem a good idea, but there are different tracks. eg. Does a C1 outrank a C7? Both are worthy engines.

I think that we should use either the ECML stations or the different types of trains. As the posts graduated the trains towards the top of the list could be in order of luxury;

Shunting Duties
Banking Duties
Local Branch Line Service
Suburban Service
Inter-City Express
Aberdonian
Flying Scotsman
Silver Jubilee
Coronation
Queen of Scots
Harrogate Pullman

Sorry I was forgetting about trains. Yes trains as well.

Interesting that you put the Harogate Pullman at the top...

We should also try to represent all the major constituent companies. So I think we should add "The Master Cutler" and the "The East Anglian".

Trains vs. Stations: I'm about to post a poll :-)

Ther were several named trains heading their way up to Yorkshire and beyond.

I was particularly fond of both the Hull Pullman and the Yorkshire Pullman.

The Hull Pullman (1967 timetable, so may not count) collected passengers from Hull, Brough, Goole and Doncaster - Kings Cross

The Yorkshire Pullman (1948 timetable) collected passengers from Harrogate, Bradford (Exchange) New Pudsey, Leeds (City) Wakefield (Westgate) Doncaster - Kings Cross.

There were others (September 27th 1948 timetable) including:

The Flying Scotsman
The Queen of Scots Pullman
The Tyne Tees Pullman

Were there any named trains going out to East Anglia, Lincolnshire areas?

John, I know that there was the 'East Anglian' and the 'Lancastrian' but I cannot off hand remember when they ran and by what companies.

Regards

Karl

P.S John there was never a train named the Tyne-Tees Pullman it was the Tees-Tyne Pullman :)

Should be.......

Shed Foreman
Locomotive Inspector
Senior Locomotive Inspector.

Others are outside the line of promotion!

Ah but I think we should have the CME and his assistant/deputies/apprentices/etc in such a line up - hence the problem of the two promotion lines...

Well, 5 people voted in the poll (the sixth was myself trying to see if the poll was still live).

Results:

ECML Stations ending at KingsX: 2
Locomotives ordered by power/prestige: 3

So with a vote turnout that makes an American Primary look good, the locomotives have a slight edge.
