Books covering LNER 1948 - 1952.

Post by jdtoronto »

Hello everybody,

I am planning to model somewhere oin the ECML in the period 1949 to 1952 (Mallard in Garter Blue!) with an Express passenger service and some local activity.

I am in the process of acquiring "The Streaks" (Mannion) and "Locomotives of the LNER Vol 2A".

What else should I be looking for? I am in Canada. so I will be looking on EBAY or through alibris.com or abebooks.com. I would like to thoroughly research the period, I prefer to buy the books because I am a bookaholic.

Any suggestions as to books please?

Welcome to the forums John!

I think I recommended those books :-)

I'm not much of an expert on Scottish activities, so I'll let others recommend books for the area.

You know that the 39 Steps has a bit of the plot through there? I was watching the Hitchcock version earlier this week. Not much other than the Forth Railway Bridge I'm afraid. (and the A1/A3 that leaves KingsX before turning into something else [GWR?] en route!).
The Kenneth More version also has the Waverley Street - FRB segment, although I have yet to see the movie itself. If contemporary, then this would be close to your target time period. It might be worth renting if you can? (it isn't on Netflix - I've checked already!)

Hello John,
Two books that I can recommend as primary reference sources are:

"Triumph and Beyond - The ECML 1939-1959, Part 1", Brooksban B.W.L. ISBN 1 899624 21 X, Challenger Publications, 1997.
"The Route of the Flying Scotsman", Brooksbank B.W.L. ISBN 0 907322 80 8, Arcturus Press, 2002.

The latter is Part 2 of the firstmentioned book. Ben Brooksbank spent very many years researching this work, and I've not found anything that remotely approaches the range and scope of the detail offered in these two books.

The bad news is that the first one is long out of print and you may have difficulty in obtaining a copy. Try a Google on "Robert Humm" - he's the largest UK-based used bookseller who specialises in transport books.

Bill,

In fact the first one is surprisingly easy to find! Using abebooks.com I was able to find quite a number of them from about $10 US. I will order them both this week.

So far I think I have found most of the books mentioned in response to my questions as well as a number of others that may or may not be of any value at all! Thanks for your contribution, and thanks again particularly to Richard and Colombo who have been most patient with my questions.
