TORNADO at Burn

ff nice pic, nice light, shame about the poles in the shot you should have waited a couple of seconds to get larger image of loco. Never mind you will have to learn photoshop now to get rid of the modern image and crop to suit.

Well, its never easy to avoid intruding overhead wires on main lines such as the ECML. And depending on how fast the train was travelling, delaying another 2 seconds might have been a wait too far - if it was going at the full 75mph at least the front part of 60163 would have been out of frame. These days most people seem to be using digital SLRs and my experince is that they start clicking as soon as the train comes into sight and don't stop until it has passed. I can only assume that such a strategy allows them to get at least one decent image, but at the expense of never learning to judge the 'right' moment to fire the shutter. So if this was the only shot that the photographer took at that location I would be quite pleased with it. Me, I'm still on single-shot 35mm.

The most intrusive wire above the loco could even be photoshopped out, or is that considered too heretical?

My first pic were I remember taking a few shots of Evening Star on the Esk Valley line in the mid 80s. You pic puts that too shame.

Everyone has their own style. I tend towards shooting trains in the landscape rather than close-ups, so to me that looks a decent picture. I might have tried for a frame with Tornado another 10/15 yards further on, but at 60mph or more, that would not have been easy.

I know it may have been with a new camera FF, but perhaps a faster shutter speed would have diminished the blurring on Tornado? Looks as if you had good light and the track's in focus, for something pelting along at 60+ I'd use the "Sports" setting on my Canon.

Flamingo's comments remind me of some stories told by some friends in the army about snipers in combat. Whereas most ordinary 'grunts' would blast rounds all over the landscape, almost in panic, in the hope that one would find its mark, snipers take the time and trouble to make one aimed round count. Digital cameras are your automatic weapons, whereas film cameras, esp non 35mm jobs, are your sniper rifles, you have to think much more carefully about your shots, that helps your discipline and concentrates the mind. Though I have to say I do find digital cameras very useful, especially when some *** walks in front of you at the critical moment...

Cheers for the comments guys-the shot was taken with my little pocket digital,Praktika dc05 slim.TORNADO was going like hell that day,and with shutter lag worrying me,i pressed and hoped!The new camera is coming next month.Then we'll see some action!!

Nice shot FF, well done. If I may give you some advice. Try cropping it on the right hand side. You don't need much - I suggest losing that distracting relay box and bringing Tornado a bit closer to the right of the frame. To me it "feels" too far over to the left. Composition is a very subtle art and I rarely take a picture that doesn't benefit from a bit of judicious cropping. In photographing a fast moving subject you will not have time to do with the camera.

If you've owned an old fashioned SLR, digital cameras aren't easy. In the light you had and the distance, the SLR would be set to the shortest exposure time possible and you would pan with the loco movement. I occasionally borrow the digital camera from work and it's taken me over a year to work out how to control shutter speed and aperture. Who needs operating instructions? Maybe steamingyorkshire could give more advice, his pictures are always super - or perhaps the trains go slower! Good hunting with the new camera,
