York has had 5 through platforms since about 1930 when Platforms 15/16 were commissioned.It had 8,9,14,15 and 16.

But my point still stands Has any other station increased its platform count?

Hi everyone.

Did you all know that the old Manors was the station that had the most through platforms between Finsbury Park and Edinburgh/Aberdeen with 6 platforms.

The 6 platforms were - Up & Down Blyth &Tyne. Up & Down Main. Up & Down Tynemouth.

Now I never said they were all on the East Coast Main Line but you could get to and from the ECML from the Blyth & Tyne by using the North West Curve at Benton.

I can't remember how many through platforms Finsbury Park had but I am sure it had at least 6.
Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Northallerton and Newcastle had 3.
Most of the Suburban Stations out from London had 4 as did York, Edinburgh and Haymarket.
All the other stations had 2 although at one time Thirsk had 4.

I am confused about the whole subway/stairway/bridge thing though. How did that work?

So the serious question is, now - who is going to write a book about Manors, and when? Anyone up to the challenge?

My “short-cut” was the entrance to Manors East. I accessed it from the west side going under a railway arch to the north of City Road. Going upstairs, it led to the entrance to the old Manors East, that is platforms 7+8. At this stage, I would have been looking at the same scene as was used in Get Carter, except that in Get Carter it is floodlit. In reality it was very dark and gloomy with hardly any lighting. Finding Manors East entrance closed, I then went down the stairs, passing the old platform 9 exit at the bottom left and then onto Melbourne Street. The dark tunnel that I described was Trafalgar Street. This took you to the Manors North entrance and the, by then, disused platform 1. The footbridge was the station footbridge which I think ran all the way across from platform 1 to platform 9.

Since my earlier post, I’ve found the Get Carter video in a charity shop for 50p and it has also reminded me of another youthful venture to ride on the mid-Tyne ferries before they were withdrawn!

I would buy a book on Manors if anyone cares to write one. As a teenager, I did seriously contemplate building a model of Manors, but as I was working in OO, I concluded that the size wouldn’t be practicable. Would love to see one!

Someone definitely should write a book about Manors. A book with lots of photos, memories and maps/plans.

Has anyone heard of even a partial model? Or seen one?

So next question. What is in the upper floors of the building fronting Melbourne St now? If anything? And, were these part of the actual station buildings, or used for something else?

I did ask ages ago, but does anyone know - were there ever plans to not demolish the North buildings? Use them for something else? Or even use them as a rail station?

I'd like to echo Pasco, and thank you for your memories of Manors. Keep them coming. To answer Pasco's question regarding the Melbourne Street building, sometimes marked on maps as 'railway arches'; My understanding is that (above the ground floor), the first floor of the curved facade acted as a screen for the long staircase. The windows on the second floor (now demolished), presumably admitted light to the buildings alongside platform 9. I don't know if the space between the glazed brick stairwell and the first-floor windows was used for anything. Does anyone in the Manors-esque community know what is happening to the old subways under Manors East? According to 'Disused Stations', the staircases were stripped-out in preparation for conversion to what must seem (if it ever opens), a rather strange restaurant. I haven't been to Manors for a while, but I'm not aware of such a restaurant having opened.

I've just taken a trip over the King Edward Bridge, through Central and on just past Manors on the ECML route. Passed a Tyneside electric and a Sentinel railcar, along with the odd J72 etc. You can do the same courtesy of John Huntley's Vol 1 of the "Steam on 35mm" series. I've got in on steam video, but I've a feeling it's on dvd now.

Worth it for that sequence alone.

Just thought you guys may be interested to see this NX signalling panel which turned up at the Cundall's Malton Railwayana Auction yesterday.It appears to be from an emergency panel at Jesmond (NER) station, and includes the Metro. It failed to sell for £5!
