Coach Identification

Post by SHMR »

Good day, I was wondering if anybody could help me identify the two Push-Pull coaches (non-corridor) in the photographs on the following website/page driven by a G5 Engine.

http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stat ... dex5.shtml
http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stat ... dex6.shtml

The picture is of South Howden formally the Hull & Barnsley Railway line. The pictures are dated 1955 before the line closed. There appears to be only several shots of these coaches and can't seem to locate the type and number they are as I would like to recreate them in 'OO' scale.

I seem to have several shots of the combinations at the station and the amount of carriage doors appears to change from 7 to 8 compartments, depending if it was a 2 or 3 car setup. In the shot I am interested in, the coach has 7 and the brake has 4 and any information would be appreciated please such as diagram numbers, coach ref numbers, kits, models or locations to mobtain further information.

Try John Turners 53A site as these are his pictures and often he has more detail on the picture.

They both look North Eastern to me. Bill Bedford will know. It looks like an auto train set, given all the windows at the brake end. Loco is a G5, but you probably know that.

Assuming they are, they may well be in Bill's range or you might try John Fozard http://jnw290.webs.com/

Thanks for the information so far, however I had already contacted John Turner and looked at the other Coach model site, but had not tried contacting him, so will do that next.

From other sources I have received the following information about the coaches: NER elliptical roof versions. The push pull driver is a conversion from a Diagram 213(?) Brake and the other is a full third I have a feeling that the number of the driving trailer was E2316E but the other one I have no information on.

This help narrow down the search hopefully, and again many thanks for the help so far.

The coaches are

4 comp driving BT D.213
2/5 comp C D.146

Possible numbers were,
BT - 228, 2237, 2278, 2312, 2978
C - 284, 2498, 21858, 21888

There were 3 of these sets working in the Hull district 1950-4, they were replaced by 3 car sets in 1955. these were made up as driving BT, C, T, some of the BTs had 6 compartments.

Many thanks for the information Bill, now having this information, would anybody know where I could obtain a drawing of this 2 set of coaches or even the 3 set as well or at least some dimentions etc or the where abouts of any kits, conversion kits for these coach sets?

That has answered the question why on another photo I have is three sets of coaches hauled by a G5, so on that score answered before even asking....many thanks

Was looking on Bill Bedford Models site and I can't appear to get a liink to the Model Gallery or the 4 mm catalogue, not sure if it's me, as I have just install IE8.

I've just fixed the permissions on the web site and every thing seems to be working again.

Good day, I was wondering after the discussion on Teak Brown in a recent post on the forum if the following Push Pull Set that run on the old H&BR fromm Hull to South Howden were also brown in colour as I was convinced they were going to be Maroon but a birdie has told me they were brown and were the roofs grey (dark /light/other)? Advice on the matter greatly appreciated. Just going for another natter on the NERS Stand.

Just about got my own answer for the question, Teak (dull) Brown, 50/50 on whether the ends were black and if the driving end was black or brown as well along with grey roof, had a very informative chat with some informative gents on and around the NER stand at the York Model Railway show, we did not exchage names , however all advice given was much appreciated and thank you again.
So at this stage going for brown all over and very very dirty at the ends and roof any comments appreciated.

We run a push-pull G5 set on Thorpe Thewles [1], the loco is a Dave Alexander kit with his push-pull fittings pack. I'm fairly sure the coaches are by Ian Kirk and, while the brake in the photo posted by SHMR seems to be a slightly different pattern to the one we have, the centre coach seems to be a good match. I'll see if Dad can put up a couple of shots of ours on his site.

1. See http://www.durhammodellers.com/thorpe/ for info.

Thanks for the information on the coaches, I would be very interested in seeing the pictures, I tried to obtain the Dave Alexander kit, however all means of contacting him apart from sending a letter failed, would anybody know if he is still trading or has a current email address. I settled for a NuCast Kit which I have heavily modified the chassis and altered the engine to match those of the photo's. Push Pull units have been a pain. I had been told about the Ian Kirk kits, however was also told he had retired and have not been able to source anything other than the pre converted diagrams with help from NERA, Hull & Barnsley Stock Fund members, Bill Bedford and John Fozard. I am presssing on with a scratch built set, however any information is much appreciated as I am sure I will need or find the excuse for another Push Pull set up.
