Unknown station
Can anyone help me to identify the station in the picture?
I have no recollection of taking the shot but I do have some other station photos taken about the same time - mid 60s.
The only clues I can give are that it is almost certainly in East Yorkshire. It is a wayside station with no other habitation visible. The rails appear to be unused. The fence & signalbox appear to be pure NER (making an H&B location unlikely). As some of the platform edging flags have been removed, the station is likely to have closed long before the line.
The adjoining shots on the strip of negatives are of Bainton station & that makes me wonder if it is on the Market Weighton Driffield line, other shots I have are of Cherry Burton & Kipling Coates.
I will be very grateful for help with this.

Re: Unknown station
Solario,
I think I'd agree it's probably on the Mkt Weighton-Driffield line - this screen is not brilliant, so I can't see it too well, but the architectural style matches.
Not Enthorpe (in a cutting), or Bainton (signal box in wrong place)....I will hazard a guess at Middleton on the Wolds.
On P156 or "British Railways Past and Present, East Yorkshire" there is a photo of Middleton on the Wolds with parts of the platform edging missing (recently taken up) which matches what I see in yours.....(I checked this AFTER I made my tentative identification, honest!!)

Re: Unknown station
Many thanks md644,
I am sure that you are correct. I used to wander about the Wolds on my motorbike in the mid 60s & I guess that I must have had my camera with me some times (a bit risky!).
I have various books covering East Riding railways but no picture of Middleton.

Re: Unknown station
Middleton station was situated just to the north of the village, off the North Dalton road.
The Market Weighton Driffield line was not that heavily graded compared to some lines but nevertheless, there was a considerable pull out of Market Weighton to Enthorpe (Enthorpe Bank) about 3 miles at 1 in 95/100 and some similar gradients in the other direction.
A lot of holiday traffic used the route from Selby (mainly) and York to Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough and I believe that a pilot engine would be available on a summer weekend at Market Weighton to assist when necessary.
The photo is of the well know SLS Special which ran in March 1965. It is climbing Enthorpe bank with the K4 3442 & K1 62005 double heading. The K1 had come onto the train at Market Weighton and stayed with it for much of the journey being detached at York on the way back (via Malton).

Re: Unknown station
In the early 1950s on excursion trains to Bridligton ,coming off the LMS, the loco was replaced at Gascoingne Wood with a pair of Selby locos which were usually a combination of D20/D49 and Ivatt 4MT. I have seen several photographs of these combinations climbing Endthorpe bank. LNER excursions from the Leeds,Bradford,Sheffield areas were usually single headed (B1,K3,B16) so maybe a pilot was added at Market Weighton or the locos worked throughout to Bridlington.Towards the end of the 1950s the double heading by Selby locos stopped and the LMS engines worked all the way through or took on a pilot loco or pilotman at Market Weighton. We even saw single LMS 4Fs on occasion so I am sure they would have required assistance up the bank.

Re: Unknown station
Certainly many trains worked up Enthorpe single handed. I have a fine picture by Neville Stead of a B16/1 storming up the bank. I imagine the pilot was stationed at Market Weighton "just in case", they could do things like that in those days!

Re: Unknown station - Middleton on the Wold
Sorry to come in late on this thread but my partners Father lived in Middleton on the Wold in the 40's and 50's and during a discussion last week he was reminiscing about his 'activities' in the Signal box and station area all very fascinating.. talk of D20's and the Filey excursions.... I wondered whether people reading this may have other sources of photos of Middleton from any era.... following the chat I bought a copy of Marsden Rail 16 which covers Market Weighton to Driffield and Beverley but no sight of Middleton, my own interests are GNR so I have no reference materail re the NER.
Any help would be appreciated,
Steve W

Re: Unknown station
Here's my shot of the station in the summer of 1977 looking somewhat the worse for wear.Th only thing which identifies it as a station is the old LNER concrete lamp post with an NER iron hoop to hang the lamp in.Looking at this photo it is hard to believe the rails were only ripped up 12 years earlier.
Re: Unknown station
Thanks for the last posting and photo.... quite sad!

Re: Unknown station
Many thanks for your photo Pinza. I have found your other photos interesting also.
There is an amazing difference between your shot & mine, I do not have a date for mine but it was almost certainly just before or just after the line closed, so there will only be about 13 years between them.
Ferrybridge, I can't oblige with steam at Flamborough station, if you had said Bempton, that would have been different but I could not possibly post a pic of a Black 5 on this thread, sacrilege.
