Brian, the date of your picture seems to be suspect, as it shows Silver Fox fitted with long buffers and re-positioned coupling. This didn’t happen until October 1936.

For me, my favourites have to be the P2 class particularly nos 2003-2006. Wonderful machines that incorporated style, beauty of design and sheer power.

Not intended as a nit-pick post; more like an 'in case of interest' : - The signals behind 2512 are undoubtedly the rather unusual combination which formed one of the arrays governing exit from KX Goods Yard, being those which controlled the Goods Departure, Coal Arrival, and Coal Departure lines. Therefore 2512 is just leaving the shed's outlet ("Down Engine..") line, and approaching Goods & Mineral signal box.

My favorite LNER locos have got to be the A4 pacifics, mainly because they are amazing engines and they look great in garter blue with wheel valances. And of course, my favorite member of this class is no. 4468 Mallard, beacause of it's speed and it's looks.

I can't got past 4468 Mallard either - it's going to see that locomotive in my youngers day at the NRM in York that got me interested in railways. Outside of Mallard though I have always liked K3's. I don't know what it is but to me they just look like proper engines should.

One of my favourites would be a B16 . Would be very useful on the nymr and much more at home than an ex-LSWR S15 . :)

My preference would be one of the B16 types followed by the V2 then K3.

My wife and had the good fortune during the mid-80's to be on Bicester station when 60007 S.N.G. passed through at great speed with an express from Marylebone to Stratford. Frighten her witless but the wonderful sound of that chime whistle at full flow brought back some very happy memories. She still struggles to understand our way of life. However she does consider 60800 a tidy engine having seen it at High Wycombe once.

Although I admired most of the NB and LNER engines around Edinburgh I will always have a soft spot for the V1 and V3 2-6-2 tanks which I used to travel to work behind from Musselburgh to Edinburgh Waverley, They had the true Gresley three cylinder beat and were a very neat and compact design. I was fortunate enough to cab one from Edinburgh on my way home from night school one evening.As lads we used to see them on the North Berwicks and Dunbars fairly rattling though Inveresk with the typical 5 coach suburban set behind them. Mind you the V2s were favourites as well and the gleaming Haymarket Pacifics were usually a sight to see.

A loco that I will always remember was one of the unloved Thompson A2/3s. 60511 Airborne.
She was the first LNER Pacific that I saw. At Leeds City station in the early 50's. I believe she had worked a Newcastle to Liverpool train,which would then be worked on with an Edge Hill Scot or similar.
She exuded power, but not beauty!

If your favourite ought to be one of the locos that you saw most frequently then my candidate list ought to be....

1 Isinglass - seemed to see it every time I visited our station (WGC)

2 Scottish Union - seemed to be up and down every day, on Leeds trains (?)

3 61097 - My father claimed that during the few months that he commuted from "the smoke" on "The Cambridge Buffet", more often than not it was ten-ninety-seven on the front.

4 Seagull - another of those ever-present stars

Choose just one? Impossible.

PS surely the only two LNER Pacifics that can be referred to as "she" were 60115 & 60135!

Mine would have to be the one I have had the best time's with, K1 62005 on the west highland extension. Firing that wonderful loco on such a magnificent railway was a real experience, and I can't wait to do it again this year :-)

My favourite has to be FLYING SCOTSMAN,the first steam engine i rode behind.Close on her heels are SIR NIGEL GRESLEY,for sheer beauty,and power-and being the subject of many of my photos!!GREEN ARROW-lovely engine.And just to wind everyone up-they ran on the East Coast Main Line,so 55002 KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY is there too.Not only the first DELTIC i cabbed,but the name of my local Regiment,sadly no more.I know the prototype first ran on other metals,but let's be honest-they were the natural progression from the A4's.
Bring back Ferrybridge station!
