There was never a Gresley teak dynamometer car. There was the NER car that is in the NRM and a steel car that was not finished until after the war. The later car was damaged and scraped in the 80s.[/quote]

I doubt very much this was the design originally envisaged. The new car was authourised in 1936/37 so designs must have been drawn in the gresley era. Gresley wasn't keen on all steel coaches and even if it wasn't teak panneled it would be a teak frame with steel/plywood panels. This would be a high profile vehicle and we have a similar preserved vehicle in the Gresley inspection saloon of 1936 at Carnforth. Although originally a non corridor vehicle it shows similarities to the new Dynomometer car as it has glass toplights to the doors. This coach was painted to look like Teak panelling which can be very effective and can be seen on the NYMR and at Boness. The dynomometer car does have a Thompson look about it. I know that Thompson was soon replaced by Peppercorn but "Thompson" design coaches continued to be built until 1950 and were still called Thompsons.

I have seen a photo of the measuring wheel side of the ex NER Dynamometer Car, in substantially the same condition as preserved at the NRM, with the exception of its running number, which is 23591. The woodgrained effect is apparent in some panels, as is some slight staining or discoloration in the lower panels. Also in the frame are parts of a new type 8 wheel tender and a 3rd Brake in Coronation stock livery. It is possible that this photo was among those taken of the train just before Mallard set off to break the speed record.

After reading this I found a copy of LNER reflections on Amazon for the princely sum of 3 pence + postage (£2.78) it is in good condition and came in a new jiffy bag with £2.80 worth of postage on it. I can see the 'LNER Reflections' book on Amazon by Nigel harris, and have also see a magazine called "Railway Relections'" which also contains LNER stuff and is a numbered magazine.
