Re: Personal memories of the GNR and early LNER
Thanks Cock o' The North - like Manna and others on this site I do find the geographical environs of the railway just as absorbing as the trains and the locomotives.
As I think you suggest it might be best to be just a little wary, for the time being at least, of placing absolute trust in the year implied by the GLIAS webpage because it's a secondary source. After all, as we have seen even the Science Museum can get things wrong. Perhaps if you send GLIAS an email via their website site, asking for a note of the source of their information, hopefully they will respond. They might be interested to see your picture - it should certainly qualify as a photograph of industrial archaeology, even if the chap operating the excavator never thought of himself as an archaeologist!
Have you another photo on the stocks yet? ...

Indeed 61070, I myself also find the infrastructure most interesting, and often find myself looking at track, being a P Way Engineer myself, and infrastructure is usually the thing that gets away; quite rarely recorded in any detail photographically.
I haven't yet approached GLIAS, but intend to. I won't discount their dating yet as while my father was ten in 1923, it is just possible that he inherited the negative from his Uncle Bernard, who also took lots of photographs. This is possible because this is the only neg in the collection which is quarter plate sized but is sheet film. All fathers are either roll film 2¼ x 3¼ or glass quarter plates. One of the things I find most moving about these negatives is the knowledge that these actual pieces of film or glass were present at that spot and at that time. Obviously and not surprisingly really, but moving nevertheless.
It is funny that while the quarter plates are bigger than the 6x9's they are much more grainy too. So much for Ilford Iso Zenith!
As for further pictures, let me see now......
I should have started this thread in the photo section, but at the time it wasn't going to be a big thread. Never mind.

Re: Personal memories of the GNR and early LNER
In the picture of 2556 above (Interestingley a new build to a GNR design but placed in the NER sequence of numbers) was the overpainted patch on the tender the previous position of the locos number?
While we are on about numbers can anyone say from what dates did NER locos carry a number on both loco & tender.
Thanks 52D

Re: Personal memories of the GNR and early LNER
Outstanding pictures. This thread really is fascinating.
The picture of 2556 does indeed show where a number had been painted on the tender - not necessarily the same number, as part of the point was to be able to swap tenders easily to save them hanging about works while the loco was repaired. It's an interesting livery variation and not one I've seen before. Presumably it's a depot renumbering, if anyone knows where Ormonde was shedded when renumbered?

Yes, numbers were originally placed on the tenders of all locomotives. They were never on both cab and tender, (unless in transitional state). Numbers were replaced to cabsides from 1928.
Here is Prince Palatine in original livery.

Lovely pictures indeed.
I've just put a couple of photos of my father's which have a strong p.way flavour (and hardly a locomotive in sight!) on the forum at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2710&p=19615#p19615 .
ps how do you include the 'file comment' caption?

Re: Personal memories of the GNR and early LNER
I realised that the LNER took the numbers off the tenders for the reason given above. What i was wanting to know if any one knew between what dates the NER had numbers painted on both engine and tender.

Re: Personal memories of the GNR and early LNER
It may have already been realised that the photo of No.70 is in KX Pass'r Loco, with the building part-visible in the right background being 'The Granary' up in 'the Goods Yard'.Cock o' The North wrote: .... " As for further pictures, let me see now......

Also, previously, the old 1877 map is interesting : Noted that it doesn't show, south of the Congreve St. bridge into the gas works, the Battlesbridge Road overbridge, which must have been gone these last 80+ years!
Finally, I see in the pic of No. 112 on 'the south stops' of Pass.loco, that the Culross Mission advert board on the building behind, as seen in the photo of 5469, had gone by then.
