Noted an LNER connection on the pic of Hector at Sheffield Victoria she is still carrying the LNER class designation EM1 on her buffer beam. Ive just looked at the rest of the pics and she is the only one carrying it.

Always a real shame to see any locos in the knackers-if they do re-open the woodhead route i wonder what traction they will use?

I dont know if you are aware Ferrybridge that when the original Great Central Railway London extension was built Watkins the general manager ordered it to be built to the Berne loading gauge which has more generous clearances than the British loading gauge. The reason being Watkins had interests in one of the Southern companies and was even thinking about a cross channel link either by a proposed tunnel or by ship.
I dont know if the Woodhead route was built to these tolerances but there is space on the original course of the route to be able to take euro freight as well as passengers.
Thats why in my opinion a rebuilt GCR connecting with Eurolink and electrified would be the answer with the unused Tinsley yard reinstated as a trans shipment point for the rest of the system. Trains from Sheffield can easily access the ECML at Doncaster and the WCML at Manchester or via Settle, Carlisle.

52D,
Good point about the missed opportunity to use the GC London Extention for continental (Container) traffic.
It was also built with curves with curves of no less than one mile radius.
Try replicating that in 4mm scale!, or 7mm come to that :|
