Unusual LNER bridge
On another site that i am a member of a picture was printed showing a moveable bridge at Northallerton. I had heard about the bridge but never seen a picture of it. I think members may find it interesting. The bridge was part of the Northallerton avoiding line and reputadly never used.
It needs to be viewed in a large size to see how unusual this bridge is.

Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Sorry guys i was able to view it full size i dont know what went wrong. I suggest you copy the image and view it in your own photograph folder. Its definitely worth looking at. Is there any suggestions from the floor how to enlarge i will pm richard perhaps he can help.

As the file size is shown as 3.24Kb, the thumbnail may well be full size? Or am I missing something?

It looks like the wartime emergency bridge that was installed as a precaution in case of bombing raids at Northallerton. It spans the Bedale branch I believe at a height of approx 3ft. Photo taken looking along the branch with the bypass line crossing on the abutments.
It was made to be moveable which is the reason for the additional rails in view. It was run into place on trolleys and stored nearby.
Film of it in use is available on a "Fastline DVD Behind the scenes" I will try and find out which one of the 4 DVDs later.

Bryan with your permission i would like to post your comments on Bygone lines group as they are under the impression it was never used. It is the bridge on the Northallerton avoiding line.

Oooooer that's very interesting. The question now is what scale shall i build a model?

This is a Google Earth image of the area. Northallerton station is just off the bottom right hand corner and the main line runs straight to the north. To the left (west) of the station the goods line passes then turns east under the main line and on towards Teesside. The curves to/from the main line are just north of the station. The Wensleydale line comes in at the extreme left of the picture with connections to the north and the sharp curve to the south just to the left of the Castle Hills caption. This is where our bridge would be where the avoiding line crosses the curve. You can trace the route of the avoiding line from the B1333 caption then north following a track and the line of trees until reaching the main line. The water troughs were a little further to the north of our map. The signal box which you can see in the distance in the picture was situated on the east side of the main line just south of the junction to/from the coast line.

Yes i think that will be my choice... However the gauge will be two foot. We are playing with my friends line tomorrow and i will suggest it.
