N Gauge C1

Post by Atso »

Having read Cock O' The North's C1 thread large-atlantic-in-n-scale-t2621.html I decided to revive my own C1 project using similar methods.

So far I've got a free running front chassis be using the Farish Jubilee (I couldn't bring myself to buy and cut up a Peco one!) which will use a modified Union Mills tender drive as the power source. So far I've roughly cut the coupling rods and removed the outside valve gear.

I also investigated using the old 2P cylinder block but decided against this as the slide bars are too far apart for the Jubilee so I took a deep breath and set about modifying the Jubilee's cylinders instead. This involved cutting the cylinders off their mounting and filling the valve cylinder down so only the main cylinder remained. I there mounted the mounting piece under the chassis and super glued the cylinders back on ensuring that they were in the correct place for the Atlantic.

A fix rear pony has been made up by filing a slot in the keeper plate where the rear driving axle would have been and building an open box structure to hold the pony wheel.

Next I've got to file down the chassis weight so that it might just fit under the boiler and make a start on the body!

All the parts used where obtained as spares from Farish and no complete Jubilee's where hurt during the initial stages of this project! Pictures below and thanks to Cock O' The North for providing the inspiration to have another go at this.

Just for interest I've just taken one of the previous pictures and placed it over some drawings I've got...

That's not a bad fit is it? Just cut the back away to accomodate the Ivatt cab, and maybe "a bit off the top" to fit the boiler and you're away!

Good luck!

see through spokes- wonderful!

The carved cylinders look spot on to me- and easier than sourcing (and fitting) parts from other locos. I look forward to seeing it take shape. Fantastic co-incidence that the 4-6-0 wheelbase becomes a 4-4-2 without any modification to the spacing!

Wonder if it would fit under my Worsley Works class C4 atlantic...h'mmmmm.

Hi guys!

Well after many false starts I've finally come up with a body for the C1 that I'm happy with. Having experimented with numerous materials I settled on building the body out of cardboard! This has been sealed with Halfords car body resin - spread thinly onto the body and allowed to soak in. After this each sub-assembly is given a rub down and offered to the chassis.

Some pictures of my progress to date - sorry about the multi coloured body but I've been experimenting with various paints to see which gives the best finish - also there is some more rubbing down to be done...

Once the basic superstructure is finished I'll need to source some fittings and do something with the Union Mills tender to make it more Great Northern!!!

The rear 3/4 view really captures the essence of the loco. Nice work. Did you use card for any particular reasons or just ease of use? It certainly looks very solid!

Hi Will and thanks for the comments.

I chose card as I've got a plentiful supply and since I've recently gone self employed money isn't as plentiful as it was at the moment. I actually found that card if easier it work with that plastic, as long as you make sure you're working with a sharp blade - you can feel when the blade gets blunt in the way it cuts through the card. Also super glue bonds very quickly with this material making construction much quick than if I'd used plastic and a solvent.

The body was made in sections which were put together to form three main sub-assemblies - the boiler, running plate/splashers and cab, please see below.

As you can see the body has changed colour again, this time to Rail Match LNER Green which I am not happy with. Therefore this will be changed again to Precision Paints Doncaster LNER Green in due course to match my other locos.

I'm sure that there are those who would disagree with my reasons but I'm happy with how this has turned out to date and I'm looking forward to making my next cardboard body...

Regarding the C1 I've noticed that the rear of the body sits to low which is causing some interference with the wheels and also I've got to reposition the cylinders about 1mm further forward to get a better look...

card modelling was at one time very popular method of building. thanks for the run-through of the sub-assemblies, I might give something similar a go at some point! (well, when the next box of cereal is finished...)

Hi Will,

Just to let you know that the C1 was constructed out of 210gsm white card as I find cereal boxes too thick for this kind of work (buildings they're great for though!).

Looks great Steve, one of my favourite locos-I think card is a great medium,IIRC there was a very nice layout with card locos in RM about a year or so ago-Midland? and a larger scale-look forward to seeing tis complete.
