Re: Thoughts on the M&D line
Yes I'd be happy to be involved with the M&D project but my thesis deals mainly with sediments so is not exactly riveting! re my original message I dont want to purchase anything (artefacts etc) Im just interested to know what type of items were found and to see the state of the chalk within the tunnel, is there a chance of that? Cheers
Re: Thoughts on the M&D line
Dear All,
As the tunnel is private property, part of the Birdsall estate, I am warning folks to keep out. You would not want to meet the next buyer of your house as a thief! and presently we are trying to build up good relations with the two main landowners.
To answer your question, Cath, One local recently entered into the tunnel although not a civil engineer, he seemed to think the blockage was due to a collapsed ventilation shaft and other C*** dumped from above by local farmers. So Burdale tunnel could be savaged in time! I always thought a railway running from Fimber to Burdale was the main aim, and then with funds and extra Kudos Burdale Tunnel could be repaired and then the line extended to Wharram to service the Medieval village and the restored Lime crushing tower. The view from up there with a sort of "Beamish" touch would surely be a honey pot for visitors without the whole area being blocked with traffic. Well there is loads of opportunities for everyone to join in!
Please come along to our next meeting in Malton, The old Lodge on the 11th December @ 7pm. Meet us in person.
Regarding membership, our website should be up and running soon.

Dear Cath Neale,
It seems you have great local knowledge about the line and the area! Presently, we are a growing group, but we are still interested in folk joining our ranks. If you feel you can help in this great project (and anybody else who is interested) please e-mail at csimpson@supanet.com

Re: Thoughts on the M&D line
Dear All,
Just to say now have our very own beginnings of a web site. Presently, we just have a forum section, which hopefully folk can find out what we are doing and being get involved. The website will contain old photos and memories of the "Main line that never was", but hopefully it will be a record of its reconstruction and new additions. Check out Yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk/forum.
Our newly formed society has individuals with many skills and experience. We have already got positive feedback from the community and some interesting projects on the table. It is fitting that in a recent meeting, we drew Folk who remembered the line to young folk who really wanted to give this a go. Most of the major earth works are still there, even today walking down Burdale lane, I began to realise soon the dodger will be thundering down the embankment taking visitors to Sledmere house!

Re: Thoughts on the M&D line
Sorry about that folks, I try to get the IT department to fix it. Presently, we are searching all over East Yorkshire and Ryedale for any photos and items from the line. I have seen a great photo of the 1958 rail charter Hull-Whitby stopping in North Grimston station and one member has the original "Sledmere & Fimber" Station sign.

Re: Thoughts on the M&D line
Well folks, we got a good slice of Pr with our Chairman being interviewed with BBC radio Humberside. The last public meeting was great with over 50 folk turning up! There is even rumours of a TV interview. When we get the better weather we are maybe planning a trackbed walk, just to get a feel of the old M&DJR. So LNER folk, why there is no harm in getting involved.

Re: Thoughts on the M&D line
We are at Driffield show this coming Wednesday. So if you are in the area, please look us up. We have several interesting M&DJR artifacts. This is our first main public presentation and we are wanting to encourage an increase in membership..especially those folks who are "not into trains". This is East Yorkshire's only feasible chance of getting it's only heritage railway...we just hope that we get some support and encouragement!

YWRRP September Meeting Report
The Yorkshire Wolds Railway Restoration Project met on Thursday 3rd September at the Driffield community centre for the first meeting after the summer recess. The guest speaker was Mr Chris Simpson, who has over 15 years experience of working within heritage railways. Chris gave an interesting insight into the rebuilding of other heritage railways and related them to the challenges facing the YWRRP. His slide show and talk was well received and demonstrated the progress of other groups up and down the country and proved what can be achieved within a relatively short period of time.
A progress report from the committee was given including news that the group has had several productive meetings with interested parties regarding the reopening of part of the railway.
The first AGM will be held on Thursday 1st October 2009 for members only, however new membership can be taken before the start of the meeting.
Should any member wish to join the committee, please contact the YWRRP secretary Ivan at izzzm@hotmail.com no later than 10th September.
The next open meeting for the group is on the 12th November 2009 at 7:30pm at the Driffield Community Centre. The guest speaker will be local railway historian, Mike Elliott, who shall be giving the second instalment of his photographic tour of the Malton to Driffield line, using incredible photographs spanning the last 100 years.
