Re: TomTank's Layout and Work Bench
Anyhow, I have been adding some more weathering to LADAS, I think I have achieved a nice effect now with my powders. Best effect is use powders, Matt Varnish, then weather again, and then varnish.
Also. you may remember I had lost the smoke box door ring, but my replacement from Derek off RMweb arrived. Many thanks once again.
it has a smoke box ring handle now, honest....even though you can't see it on here
What do you guys think? I would appreciate your feedback

Re: TomTank's Layout and Work Bench
Last night I did some ballasting around the main lines. Looking quite nice. Also been altering some track work. Not easy when you have ballasted it. My inside line is quite tight, and A1 Kestrel couldn't do it as the curve was un even. but thanks to some jigery pokery She copes with it now so I can have A1s running on the up and down lines. It's odd as the A3s and A4s cope absolutley fine with it.
Anyhow, taken some photos this evening, 60097 and 60130 wait patiently at Eastcote Central. KESTREL is about to leave with an express for Edinburgh, where as Humorist (quite far away from her home shed of Haymarket) has just arrived with a train from Doncaster.

Don't the A3s and A4s both have flangeless cartazzi wheels Tom? That might account for their better handling on tight or difficult corners compared the "floating" arrangement of the Peppercorn A1 model.TomTank wrote:Last night I did some ballasting around the main lines. As always Tom, it looks superb. Particularly like Kestrel and Humorist lined up there!

Good to see you here Simon, bout time you joined
hmmm I thought the setup on the cartazzi was the same on the Pepp A1s as it was on the A3s, Dan on PW said he thought it was due to the longer wheel base of an A1.
Anyhow she navigates it ok now, even at speed and it's pretty smooth.
How does WP ALLEN navigate your curves, do you have any issues?

Re: TomTank's Layout and Work Bench
As you know I have very tight curves on mine - not quite 2nd radius but closer to that than 3rd. I actually removed the rear cartazzi wheel completely in order for the A1s to negotiate the layout - no one ever notices! I pop the wheels back in for display or when they run on someone elses layout. The only exception to this rule is Tornado, whose floating wheelbase I modified to my own design.TomTank wrote:Simierski wrote:Don't the A3s and A4s both have flangeless cartazzi wheels Tom? If you look at your Hornby models they should have flangeless wheels on the cartazzi - the Bachmann ones are flanged, but floating, as opposed to flangeless and fixed (although the Hornby ones normally come with a spare, flanged wheel which can be swapped over ).
The A1 does indeed have a longer wheelbase - this is probably the main cause, but I'd say the cartazzi was the main factor towards the outcome of a derailment.

Re: TomTank's Layout and Work Bench
Ok, first of all....I found the other cabside foor, it was lodged in the cab of Foxhunter!
Ok, secondly, have a look at Kestrel, notice anything?
This shows it clearly
Yep, as well as her having a crew, I have fitted a tarpaulin to protect the crew from the elements. I think She may be the only A1 I fit it to, as it was such a fafe.
Anyhow hope you like it

Hi Tom,
I've been reading you posts for awhile now and I think your producing some outstanding work. I do especially like your Humourist conversion (a favourite locomotive of mine), well done on retrieving what could have been a disaster with the cab side renumbering.
The tarpaulin on the Peppercorn looks the business as does the crew, nice to see a driver looking where he is going!
Keep up the good work with the modelling and your budding filming career!

I have some more views with the tarpaulin, have slackened it off as it was stopping Kestrel on the corners, looks better now as it's crinkled.
I like how the tarpaulin moves on the bends and on the straights slightly, adds realism
As for the driver with his head out, it's quite funny as he was too tall when sat on the A1 chair. So I cut his legs off lol. I found that the only way to secure the tarpaulin was to take the figers out.
In the end I had to cut his other arm off so I could get him in through the window, and I found he looked pretty good with his head out.
Once again, I appreciate the feedback, as I have often felt bad just keep updating the thread without feedback back.
Thanks again!
Tom Foster

Re: TomTank's Layout and Work Bench
cheers for posting images. The tarpaurlin looks nice- and it is these sort of details that go a long way to adding realism. Talking about flexibility, it reminded me of tender fall plates actually, where I was once told that the rubber strips supplied in bicycle tyre repair kits were perfect (in texture and colour) to represent a tender fall plate whilst still being flexible enough to round the unrealistic curves that nearly every modeller has to impose on his layout.
nice work. I do love a post-war pacific thundering along a stretch of mainline.

Re: TomTank's Layout and Work Bench
Afternoon everyone
Well... Sandwich is no more ...... instead we have Gainborough!!!
Has been an interesting conversion this today. The actual nameplates I have found to be alot easier to deal with than Fox Transfers.
That said, the decals I doubt I will use again. I got the originally as they are printed on Brunswick Green, hence you don't have to fiddle trying to get the existing numbers off.
Firstly, the decal with it's backing is too big, which causes it over lap the cabside border, so has meant fidderling cutting bits off. And seconldy it doesn't blend in aswell as other decals I have used, if you look closely you can tell it's a transfer. Now I have weathered it, it's not too bad.
In future I will do it myself using Simerski's advice, or get David to do it for me (the chap who did 60134 for me)
Anyhow enough talking here are the pics
slight bit of metal needs touching up by smokebox number plate
