Re: New class 70 locomotives
North/South Tyneside electrics should not be ignored either they were a response to local bus and tram competition and were a focal part of Tyneside transport for over 50 years and very much part of the LNERs look forward.
Imagine if the LNER board had gone down the Southern route we may have had lines such as Newcastle Carlisle with third rail electrification (not that i would have liked to see it) but in my opinion LNER and constituent companies electric and internal combustion experiments are worthy of study and should not be driven from these pages.

Re: New class 70 locomotives
LNER locos, yes mainly steam but also the NER electrics, Woodhead, the DES1s, etc can be discussed in the LNER forums - especially General Discussion, LNER Locomotives, Model Railways, and even "LNER News".
This forum here ("Non-LNER Chat -> Railway Chat") is for *all* other railway topics - that can be modern stuff, GWR,(!), US, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, etc, etc. This is the place for all off-topic (ie. not LNER by my fairly wide definition) railway discussions. To say "No diesels" on the "Non-LNER-Chat -> Railway Chat" forum seems to defeat the point of the topic's existence, in my opinion.
I am not inclined to split the forum into two (steam, modern) - too many forums is a mistake that many sites make. This is an LNER site - two off-topic forums should be sufficient!

I quite agree, although a steam man myself I do have interests in other forms of traction, though not post privatisation. But that is my point of view and I am happy to see other interests catered for. This is an excellent forum, long may it continue.

No, not at all. I'm of the same mind as 52A's and 52D's last comments.Bullhead wrote:So any mention of Shildon/Newport, the Tyneside electrics or Woodhead is out, then?giner wrote:We are, in the vast majority, a steam-driven community on here.

Re: New class 70 locomotives
If I had known the trouble that starting this thread would cause, I would not have bothered! I am primarily steam and NER orientated, but have an abiding interest in all things connected with railways like, I suspect, most other members of the forum. I followed the guidelines for the topic, so surely if someone is not interested, or objects to non LNER stuff, then why read the "Non LNER Chat" section?
What about Deltics then? Or the discussions re GNER and NXEC, or even Tornado?giner wrote:Yes, Richard, while it is a valid subject for Non-LNER Railway Chat and is within the 'letter of the law' under this heading, my own leanings would prefer much the 'spirit of the law' be enacted and the post-1968 era be ignored, especially when it comes to the moving eyesores of today. We are, in the vast majority, a steam-driven community on here.
Re: New class 70 locomotives
That is not causing trouble, that is inspiring debate, you are quite corect in what you say, that section is for all things railway, and again, long may it continue!

Metrovicks ugly? Sorry, I think they had a certain look to them if seen at their best angle

Re: New class 70 locomotives
HQ1 im with you on the metrovicks they have a certain charm just like claytons and teddy bears mind you in my spotting days a saw a few of them but can only recall seeing one actually moving just south of Kingmoor. The others were all at rest in Upperby.
Whilst on about Kingmoor i recall a fireless loco working just after the first bridge south from the depot can any one shed light on it.
Congrats in joining me as a class mate in the rankings.
Wouldnt it be nice if Freightliner adopted Ex Britania names for ths class 70s and painted them Brunswick green.

I think that fireless loco was in the power station.

Re: New class 70 locomotives
Glad 52D is with me on the Metrovicks - they weren't a great bargain for BR, that's for sure and perhaps it would have been better if they'd been re-engined like their Irish cousins by GM. Here's another handsome devil on display at what could be Marylebone:
