PDK D10 & D11 Kits

Hallo all
Can anyone advise on the merits or faults of the PDK D10 & D11
please? I know that the auld Gibson J11 was not quite right so I wonder if
these beasties are basically sound or in need of any drastic surgery?

I have virtually completed the D16 as my first loco kit. just got the lining and transfers to go. It was OK but the insturctions left something to be desired and I had to really file down the in side of the splashers to get the bioler/firebox seated properly. Other than that I really enjoyed it and am loking forword to the next loco build. I have a PDK 02 in the to build pile.

Thats a good question because I was thinking about it too. I actually asked PDK what it would cost for them to build it as I have not yet started to build Loco's. I have built plastic coach kits; 'Silver Jubilee' & Gresley Rest. I would like an LNER D10 Director 'Walter Burgh Gair' 5433 Lined Black. Must have been a relative, same surname.

The top steam loco on the 2009 MREmag wish list was the Director, so here's hoping Hornby produce it (without traction tyres), since they produced the SR/BR Schools 440, they might just do it. If they don't I will have a go at the PDK kit in 2010.

Done a couple of these and had only minor problems. The tender is not quite the same quality as the loco, but all in all a good kit.

I've never knowingly seen one of his builds close up but they photograph really well http://www.scalefour.org/portfolio.htm#5654. A two year waiting list speaks for itself as well.

I can vouch for the quality of John Brighton's work, being fortunate enough to have a Connoisseur N10, PDK D49/2, DJH BR standard 2MT 2-6-0 and DJH BR standard 3MT 2-6-0 all built by Steamline. He's currently working on a Dave Bradwell K1 for me.

I hope this late contribution doesn't come too late to help you, but I would suggest that you could also consider a Little Engines D10 kit if you can still get one. Constructed with care, and in my case also employing an alteration to the chassis concept in order to get balance, traction, and all-wheels electrical pick up, a nice loco results. The chassis alteration as you will see basically made the rear of the loco rest on a "rocking truck" comprising the driven coupled wheels, leaving the also-heavy front to actually ride on the bogie. I think the tender has advantages over those picture on the PDK website too, such as the presence rather than absence of mostly correct covers for all the water pick-up gear etc. Making the tender front ride on the loco drawbar (with floppily sprung front wheelsets in the tender) is a further aid to traction.

You can still get Little Engines kits, I believe, although supply is irregular. C & G Models used to carry them; it may be worth asking North Eastern Models, who have taken over the shop, whether they are still doing so.

Sherwood Models also used to list them but looking today I see there are none shown on the website.

Oddly enough I had a look for Little Engines' latest details on the internet this week, and didn't find what I wanted. The task must call for a better man than me, but fortunately there are plenty of those around
