Both posts edited. Tom, please don't post personal information such as that, although it's unlikely it will be seen by anyone influenced by it, there's always a chance, which could have serious consequences for both the forum, you and the person mentioned

Re: NXEC GESTAPO
All told, this is an easy forum to manage and moderate - even the anti-spam controls work!
I think there are only three times moderators have had to step in and on one of those occasions, the offender had corrected their messages before I or any other moderator was able to do anything.
I have a new site for the geospatial web (online mapping) now if only I could get people to post on it and if I could stop the spammer signups...

Here is another one, this time the Branson SS assault a railway enthusiast.
here is again another one ,our 11 year old grandson took a picture on a camera phone in a shop in portsmouth the other day and was told off by the security guard ,and warned that it was a terrorist threat to take photos in the shop. [it must be ok if youre a shoplifter]

Re: NXEC GESTAPO
In Spain this week.
At Cartegena station, was pounced on before I got my camera out and got escorted off the station by security.
In Valencia station, mananaged to get 7 pics before security pounced, told to leave the station concourse, at least I got to keep the pics.
No joy in Barcelona either, it seems the Spanish stations have now employed external security companies.
I suppose they are still touchy after the Madrid bombing.
No probs at Manchester airport station this afternoon while taking a few pics, see what Vienna brings week after next.

Re: NXEC GESTAPO
To help stop any potential issues with the 'Gestapo', have a look at www.nationalrail.co.uk. They have a nice little section marked 'Enthusiasts'. This has the do's and don'ts and at no time goes it say that it is illegal or a terrorist threat to take photographs. In fact, it even encourages us to be there as it states that we can be extra eyes and ears. The site advises printing a copy and taking it with you when you go cranking/gricing or whichever term you prefer.

Re: NXEC GESTAPO
Just got back from Austria, no problems, same as last year and I was in a different location this time at Kufstein, plenty of activity both local and inter city.
The security guards did keep an eye on me but never approached or asked what I was doing, no problems at Wogel (OBB depot) or the Mayerhofen spur.

Re: NXEC GESTAPO
Hi Keith,
Thanks for the link to National Rail. Here's the "enthusists" page link:
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/passenger ... iasts.html
My first reaction, that's the one that usually counts was, good grief the world's gone completely bonkers. Do we really need to be reminded to:
Stay clear of the platform edge and behind the yellow lines where they are provided for safety reasons.
Do not trespass onto any area of the railway that is not available to passengers.
Do not climb on any structure or interfere with platform equipment.
Ensure that you do not obstruct any signalling equipment or signs which are vital to the safe running of the railways.
Surely, all of this is just plain common sense.
Then we get this:
Be aware of your surroundings. We also kindly ask you take note of any unusual behaviour and activities and report anything suspicious to a member of staff or for more serious incidents, to the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency, dial 999. Your presence at the station can be very helpful to us as extra "eyes and ears" and can be a positive security benefit.
We might as well go back to pasting WW2 posters in stations about the walls having ears, etc.
Further, in the section on photography:
Flash photography on platforms is not allowed as it may distract the attention of train drivers and train despatch staff and is therefore a potential safety hazard.
This, because it might be construed as an explosion, I suppose.
Like I've said before, the war on terrorism is over, they've won. But I suspect that most of this stuff is engendered by the modern day culture of taking no responsibility for one's own behaviour. Far better to sue the ar$es off any company should little Johnny fall and scrape his knee on the platform, as long as he's on the 'safe' side of the yellow line. In this respect, the companies can hardly be blamed for covering their butts in this litigious society. It's a strange world we now live in.
What's the situation in the U.K. re. taking photos on the train itself? For what it's worth, the missus and I took on a recent rail trip here in Canada and took numerous photos without any hassle whatsoever.

Re: NXEC GESTAPO
The class 333 electrics on the Wharfedale and Airedale lines aren't bad. The 142s and 144s that are occasionally used as replacements (for failures?) are not popular when they are used - we call them cattle trucks on this side of Leeds, FF.
The Canadian train does look luxurious - mind you, with journeys lasting four days rather than four hours, that's probably as well.
