The Pits
Got this from the Railway Eye blog tonight. At least we know where we stand as regards historial values in today's Edinburgh. Nobody would dare deface the memorial to Sir Hebert Walker on the concourse at Waterloo... (I hope!)
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

Re: The Pits
Is that a permanent sign or just a portable one that's been rolled to its spot willy nilly by some nine-quid-an-hour 20-something - a seemingly ignorant one at that?

Dunno - but it's a cheek, anyway. Have already complained to The Gresley Society. Is there any NR manager out there who can help, I wonder?giner wrote:Is that a permanent sign or just a portable one that's been rolled to its spot willy nilly by some nine-quid-an-hour 20-something - a seemingly ignorant one at that?

Re: The Pits
Gresley was a Scot, having been born in Edinburgh - which is why there is a (partially obscured) memorial to him at Waverley.TonyM wrote:What do you expect from the Scots!!!! they have all got their brains, what brains the have got, in their Sporrans!!!!!!!*******

Waverley is managed by Network Rail. Network Rail's national helpline is 08457 11 41 41; alternatively, comments and queries can be registered here. However, I'll have a word with the Station Manager myself when I'm back at work on Tuesday.
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

Re: The Pits
Following Bullhead i got in to the link to Network Rail and sent this to them will others off the site please send more similar emails or cut and paste this one with their own signature attached to it.
Sir,
As a member of the LNER Encyclopedia web site I am writing to you to object to the siting of a notice in front of a plaque commerating Sir Nigel Gresley at Waverley Station.
Please consider moving the offending poster as i find it objectionable to the memory of the man who possibly did the most to get a high speed route up the East coast.
His memory should not be disfigured by the careless siting of a modern poster in this manner.
Thanks to our members NR should take action

Re: The Pits
I find it strange to mention Network Fail and manager in one sentence, I din't think they had any.

It would be good to find a different version of this shot that gave the real relative heights of the sign board and the background. Otherwise people are going to make fools of themselves going off half cock at something that could have be published as a wind up.

Re: The Pits
A bit hard, chap - the ones who actually make the railway run, i.e. the ones looking after the signalmen, the controllers, the p.way and the ECOs, or ECRs (depending where you come from) and who turn out any time of the day when they are on-call haven't changed much since our day. The ones at the top, unfortunately, have - oh, how I wish I could have them thrown out on their ears..52A wrote:I find it strange to mention Network Fail and manager in one sentence, I din't think they had any.

No reason at all not to fire off a warning salvo, though - that way the staff would be mindful of the memorial in futureBill Bedford wrote:It would be good to find a different version of this shot that gave the real relative heights of the sign board and the background. Re: The Pits
Alas I worked for this lot during Grayrigg, their behaviour towards the staff was appalling. Does tend to colour my judgement.
