A1 Pacifics

Post by Flying Scotsman »

Hi there,

I was wonder whether anyone would know at all whether any A1, A1/2, A2/3's ever went on the Great Western Region or LMS Region in British Railways days?

I know A3's and A4's have but as for the locomotive classes above I have no idea... :D

Thanks Everbody!

For the Peppercorn A1s the answer is a definite yes. I saw and photographed 60114 at Worcester shed 85A on 26 July 1964. This engine had worked in on an enthusiasts railtour earlier in that month but on arrival at Worcester it had failed, and was unable to work the return train.

I know for sure that several A1's worked on the WCML in the 1950's and again in the early 60's after withdrawal of the Duchesses. No doubt others will have details to hand but I've several books with photo's of such instances on Shap etc at home. I believe that several A1's and A2's were based in Glasgow in later days as well.

In 1963-65 some A2s of both Thompson and Peppercorn varieties were based at 66A Glasgow (Polmadie) ,while in the early 1950s the same shed had some of the Scottish Peppercorn A1s for a spell, employed down to Carlisle and Crewe, often on the Birmingham -Glasgow services. In the mid 60s with steam frequently used on a 'common user' basis A1s were fairly regular sights over the Settle & Carlisle and there was a report of 60131 working north on the WCML over Shap C1965 on a summer train. There were probably also incursions into the Derby area on occasions.

From the brief research I've carried out it would appear that, as Stembok says, A1's 60160, 60161 and, I believe, 60162 were based at Glasgow (Polmadie) for varying periods 1951-1953 for working the WCML down to Crewe - "Treacy's British Rail" has a good photo of 60161 at Shap on a Birmingham (New Street) - Glasgow turn in 1952.
Later on, A2/3's 60512, 60522, 60524 and A2's 60527, 60530 and 60535 were also allocated to Glasgow (Polmadie) from 1963 to general withdrawal in 1965 for similar duties and also a fair amount of freight turns, I believe.

A1 60152 Polmadie 66A, 14/1/51 -11/3/51 and 28/12/52- 29/6/53
60160 -------- 14/1/51 -4/3/51 and 16/4/51-22/2/52.
60161 -------- 14/1/51- 11/3/51 and 16/9/51- 29/6/53

There is no mention of 60159/162 as permanent official transfers, but there seems to be evidence that they were at 66A, perhaps on short term loan spells.

60530 was transferred to Polmadie from St Margarets 15/9/63 but then "escaped" to Dundee 62B, 31/7/64 . Withdrawn 19/11/66.
60512/22/24/35 were at Polmadie from 1963 until withdrwal in 1965 ,pretty much unwanted, unloved and frequently 'stopped' out of traffic. Sent there mainly for freight.parcels and irregular passenger work after the withdrawal of the remaining Polmadie LMS Pacifics in the autumn of 1963.
