LNER Coronation coaches

Post by Kestrel »

These now seem to be available if you ordered them two years ago for a total of £502.95.

Hornby's website shows them as now 'out of stock' or 'unavailable' with yet another price hike, up to £681.95.

That's an overall increase of £179.00

My friendly local shop says he can only take 10% off £681.95. I wouldn't expect anything else. So back to Hornby it is if you ordered them in 2022 and pay £502.95.

yep, £502 is what i will be paying, whilst the 4 pairs are in the warehouse the obs car is not yet about . only reason I know is that the card i had set up to pay for them has expired so they have been asking for a new payment source. to be fair it's cheaper than I could build them for if i included my time as I do quite a bit of model making as a secondary business.

I've just been looking at a set which has been delivered in Australia. The do look very good and for an 8 car set I have to say the initial price is not excessive.

I agree Jonathan, I was quite happy with the price I paid, around the $260 AUD mark for each twin. I think that’s quite fair considering the amount of detail that’s gone into the artic design, interiors and all the steel numbering/lettering.

Jesse,

You don't have to ask anyone to build a mailcoach version, that is a blessing. They might be busy anyway.

I have not seen them yet, but I am sure the finish is way beyond most modellers' skills.

I hope to see video of a set at Woolmer Green.

Cheers,

John

Mr DPD man dropped off a parcel today with four boxes inside, each one containing a pair of Coronation coaches. They are a true work of art. It seems a shame to take them out of their boxes. Now the wait for the observation car.

Would there be more reason to be confident of a matching finish on the observation car if all vehicles were produced and delivered at the same time?

Assuming that they were produced in the same factory (and I remember the aphorism re 'assume'), Hornby will have specified the livery scheme in detail, including the colours, and should have then approved the finished samples. But there's potentially many a slip twixt sign-off and finished article.

Time will tell, but Hornby will have egg on their faces if they don't match in all respects.

It's a shame Hornby's 'Commonwealth of Australia' and 'Empire of India' don't have stainless steel lettering and numbering and strip on the valence. They are just painted silver.

TMC say they can do the lettering and numbers but not the strip.

G'Day Gents

A modeller on Facebook, has/is building a Silver Jubilee set (assumed to be Kirk) for his silver lining, he used chrome tape, used in Ladies nails, again assuming, he would have got it from a Nail salon. Anyone game enough to go in and Ask ???????

For my mailcoach coronation and SJ sets I used a silver pen for the lining in the end. I played around with tape and wasn't happy with the end result. I did use tape for the valance when converting a Hornby A4 to Dominion of NZ. Also side fox etched letters/numbers. My Coronation set won't rival Hornbys but they were a lot cheaper and not easy to build so will stick with them after all that effort! One thing I could have liked is to be able to have raised lettering on the coach sides but couldn't find a solution to that one.
