LNER 04 Number 6284/ROD 1819

Post by Brackers5 »

Hello,
I own a 15" gauge, roughly quarter scale steam locomotive based on 04 number 6284, some may remember this loco was based at Cleethorpes for several years.
As part of a partial repaint for the loco I am planning on putting the number on the buffer beam. The trouble is every loco seems to have some variation of livery.
I have searched high and low, in Yeadons register, Rowldge's ROD 2-8-0 books and hundreds of other places for a photo of 6284, to see what livery details she had and how the buffer beam looked but never found one.
Does anyone have any photos of the big 6284 or know where there is one?

Thank you very much in advance!
Tom

I can’t direct you to an image at present I’m afraid.

Is the loco to be based somewhere other than Cleethorpes when you’ve finished work on it? LNER locos in steam, large or miniature, seem to be regrettably thin on the ground now. Loss of another one from just down the road from me would be a further disappointment, but knowing where to see it would at least compensate a little...

Can't get closer than 6286, I'm afraid.

This model I presume?.

https://locomotive.fandom.com/wiki/Clee ... ss_No.6284

The Numbers etc should be if pre war in shaded Yellow , they appear to be unshaded white ?. The same Yellow colour for the Bufferbeam Numbers.

The lettering in the photo is unshaded Gill Sans typeface Lettering Numbers used by the LNER postwar but should also be in Yellow and on the Bufferbeam.

It also look like it is part Red Lining to the the Boiler ? That was only applied upto 1928 on Goods Locomotives, plain Black from then onwards.

She hasn't been at Cleethorpes for a couple of years, she is likely to be running at Thorpe Light Railway near Barnard Castle next year.
I have managed to find photos of most 628X apart from 6284 which is fairly infuriating!

Thats an old photo thats linked, shes had yellow numbers/letters on cab and tender for a few years now, i'm hoping to add numbers to the bufferbeam over the winter. There seems to be variation of the location of numbers on the bufferbeam, I presume depending on whether the bits for the safety chains they had for use in France were removed or not, some 04s had buffer beams replaced and it seems some didn't. Also photos show some had "Class 2.8.0." In small white letters. I am aiming for a reasonably accurate 1925-7 ish appearence. Hence I wanted to get 6284s details correct.

Thanks for your replies guys! :D

I believe "Class 2.8.0." would probably be the result of work done at Darlington.
