Re: Copenhagen Fields & TFW’s workshop
A week ago the KX Goods Yard ramp line would have looked like this:
The line to the Caledonian Goods & Coal Yard had been roughed-in with a place holder by Mike Randall about 10 years ago, refined some more in 2016 and incorporated with Matthew Wald’s Goods & Mineral Signal Box in July’ ‘21. It was the last major civil engineering structure to be finished - above ground. I thought it was about time the area was worked-up some more, especially as we are having a photo shoot on Thursday. Mike’s core was basically sound, but much more detail was needed, with filled-in arches under the ramp and more ‘business’ in the S&T yard. The side walls of the ramp were marked out with a pair of dividers.
The arches were scribed-in and then the centre part cut out. The arch ring was paired away with a #15 scalpel plate to give a guide line for painting.
The structure was further refined and string brick courses and capping added. The arch infill pieces were thinned down so that there was a slight height difference with the arch spandrel.
A new 1mm thick ply track bed was made and the track laid directly on to this: the base being screwed down to the ply sub-structure with 1/8” ~1 wood screws.
The goods yard now looks much bigger than it did: a strange effect, really, whilst the S&T yard has acquired some signal bits and extra buildings from the old Hill End layout. Signals are being made, indeed the Down Goods gantry to the south of Copenhagen Tunnel can just be glimpsed in the background, being made by Peter Chapell. Finally a bit of an arty shot with some early morning mist in the yard. [URL=https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/ ... fit=bounds][/URL
A busy week…

G'Day Gents
Excellent, My great regret is I wished I'd walked up this line up to Caledonian Goods yard back in the early 70's.

The track up the ramp viaduct and across the bridge over the N. London Incline had been lifted by 1970 manna, but I've a feeling that it was still in situ further up, including the run-round loop at the top, and some distance round (behind 'Mrs. Wilberforce's cottage' ) towards the CG&C Depot.

Great picture Most of the times I worked up there it was in and out. Never had a lot of time to look around, pity.

The likeness of the layout photos to the sample picture of the actual location says it all.

A visitor returning to York.

The beautiful Coronation set was made by John Aldrick and is more normally seen on Peter Kirmond’s superb York layout.

What a great result Tim Watson !Tim Watson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 11:28 pm The completed Belle Isle Down signal bridge has been trial fitted at the north end of Gasworks Tunnel.
A bit of work round the bases will finish the job.

[ Pedantic point : I hope when CF is open to the public, that the Down Main Distant from Down Main No.1 is never seen at Clear (as in these two photos) while BID's DM1-DM Home arm above it is still at Danger ! ]

Re: Copenhagen Fields & TFW’s workshop
This picture was possibly taken in late 1973 or early 1974 due to the picture featuring 'up on the north London line' in the distance the redundant T-bracket signal post that belonged to York Way s/box that I believe closed at the same time as the following box along the line heading westward at Maiden Lane in October 1973. With regards to York Way s/box this box had a fabulous panoramic south facing view from the box across the entire of central London that included both Kings Cross and St Pancras station buildings and roofs and by 1965 it was joined by the tall tower of the then newly opened 'post office tower' which could be seen a couple of miles away along with a small number of newly built high rise office blocks towards the west end area because the box was located 'high up' on the north London line and from memory being situated between the no.1 lines (the non electrified lines) & no.2 lines (the DC electrified lines). I did personally visit the box shortly after closure but the less said about that the better ha ha..Tim Watson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 1:13 pm
One of the incredibly useful George Pring photos of the area. Was the track planked over in any parts?
