The D16 progresses. The quite fun painting has moved onto the less fun lining but we are getting there.

On a different note I threw in a low bid on this and was surprised to be successful. The plan is to now take the pannier chassis out from my old Lima J50 and pop it under a J52.

That does leave this needing back dating to the 30s. Apart from renumbering and sorting the smokebox door I don't think I need to change anything else. The lower safety valves and plated coal rails seem to be around pre-war unless anyone knows better?

Finally decided today to sit down and stop avoiding the annoying bit of my Royal Claud build.

...Quite why I thought this was a better idea than just building the Mallard models kit I don't know...

I actually have a Mallard Models D16 kit and have been studying the etch design. As a kit, it was probably alright in its day, and some aspects of the design remain quite good. The instructions have pretty good diagrams though they only make one mention of EM and P4, whilst the etches themselves leave it completely open as to how you build it for the scale gauges - no specific spacers for either of the wide gauges are supplied.

Whilst it does try to cover all the bases, it turns out that the only variant you can't build from the parts supplied is the 1933-onwards D16/3 rebuild with the ornate valencing removed, simplified footplate over the driving wheels, plain cab and separate splashers, plus a more substantial front-frame section for the piston-valved engines.

Shame really, as these "simplified" D16/3s should really be the easiest to put together.

I've often got some way into a job and started to wonder why I chose to do it that way, or why I chose to do it at all, but I don't think that has ever stopped me from finishing jobs off.

The Mallard models kit would, I think, build up pretty nicely. I made the choice to splice it with the Hornby model for a number of reasons but doesn't mean they were very good reasons.

I don't like to give up on these things either and it is very nearly finished now, just awaits numbers and letters.
I have of course broken the annoying Hornby tender plug and have lost patience with trying to fix it so have ordered a new one. Seems a silly design to me.

The Isinglass drawing for the simplified D16/3 should give clues as to what needs cutting out of the kit.

It was probably the valencing that put them off. Would be quite easy to damage.
