A2 60536 'Trimbush'

Post by hq1hitchin »

Here she is - but would anybody care to guess passing which station?
PS - am I the only one who finds the A2 virtually identically in looks to the A1 ha ha

Me too. Except that Trimbush had a single chimney. btw, which other Peppercorn A2s had single chimneys?

The station? Not a clue. Now I suppose you're going to say it's in the Herts/Beds area, and I really will be shamed.:D

Incidentally, Trimbush, the racehorse, was the winner of the 1947 Doncaster Cup. See, I can google anything.:D

Seems this photo would have been taken quite early on - 1949? - and the station is not in Beds or Herts, giner, but Middlesex and is Grange Park on the Hertford loop.

60536 seems - if I am reading it correctly - to have Copley Hill (Leeds) painted on the buffer beam and she was there from new, 5/48 until moving to New England 12/48.

Hi hq1,

I guess what threw me on the location was that in all my years by the lineside at Langley, etc., never once did I set eyes on 60536, though from your picture, she obviously did pass my way at least once.

It was always mentally noted as some northerner that would never see daylight south of Peterborough. Come to think of it, most A2's seemed to fall into that category.

I spent 100s of hours by the line side in the 1950s at Selby 14 miles South of York on the ECML.The only regular Scottish pacific workings were the A4s on the summer Elizabethan so the 7 64B locos were copped fairly quickly. As for the Scottish A1,A2andA3s they were only copped when working down to the Plant for overhaul ,usually light engine. They could appear at any time of the day much to the delight of us local spotters(you wouldnt see one for weeks so it was all very random) .In the end I never did see 4 of the Scottish A3s and 2 A2s- I did see Trimbush, however ,but only the once.We rarely saw them working back North in ex works condition. The Scottish V2s were even rarer and only appeared on the odd summer special(more likely working South to be reallocated)
In 1958/59 60031 appeared on Selby shed in pristine ex-works condition so it must have failed on its way back North.

There was a nice colour shot of 60536 in one of the railway mags a few years ago leaving Grantham for the north in May,1961 after her final general repair at Doncaster. Whether Scottish Pacifics made it to London largely depended on their use by Doncaster shed after overhaul and before being returned home, though there was the odd through working apart from the Elizabethan, particularly in the early diesel days when the latter misbehaved themselves! I remember 60027 and 60031 by then of 65B St Rollox appearing at King's Cross after Works attention in 1962-63. The Scottish V2s came to Darlington for repairs and so they were rarer still with less opportunity to be seen south of York. Often the Scottish Pacifics would be sent north after repair on freights and I recall seeing 60534 and 60099 on the north east coast on early morning down freights in the 1950s.
