No 1300 : This was the Vulcan Foundry loco. As a 4-cyl compound it had Walschaerts valve gear, but how many sets - two or four? After its 1917 rebuilding as a two-cyl simple it kept Walshaerts gear. Presumably this was outside, but I'd like this confirmed by someone who knows.
No 1421 : As a compound I take it this had two sets of Walschaerts gear (unless the account on this site is seriously misleading). In 1920 it was rebuilt as a standard C1 Atlantic. Does this mean its Walschaerts gear was replaced by inside Stephensons?
Clarification on these points would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Queries re Ivatt Atlantics 1300 & 1421
According to Norman Groves, Great Northern Locomotive History Volume 3a 1896-1911 The Ivatt Era...
No 1300 - p207 final full paragraph in column 2: Four separate sets of Walschaerts valve gear could be linked up by a single screw reverse gear of patent design. Fig. 180 on p203 is a photograph of 1300 as rebuilt showing it with outside Walschaerts valve gear.
No 1421 - Fig. 181 on p210 is a photograph of this locomotive in August 1907 in which the accompanying caption states '... Walschaerts valve gear for all four cylinders'. The subsequent rebuilding is described on p211 as 'thorough rebuilding as a standard two-cylinder Atlantic and was counted as a new engine... and having piston valve cylinders'. No photograph following rebuilding and no definitive statement as to type of valve gear.
The information for No 1300 may also be confirmed by reference to Locomotives of the LNER Part 3A p20-22. Likewise that for No 1421 on the following pages, again with the absence of a description of the valve gear type following rebuilding.
However if 1421 was rebuilt as a standard engine that suggest the standard arrangement and type of cylinders and valve gear too.
I'm sorry but I don't have a copy of the relevant Yeadon's Register.

Re: Queries re Ivatt Atlantics 1300 & 1421
There's a photo of 1421 as rebuilt in Yeadon Vol. 13, page 12. No outside valve gear - so almost certainly Stephenson's gear inside. Everything I've read elsewhere describes the rebuild as a "standard engine".

Grateful thanks for your prompt replies. Stephensons was so ubiquitous that its presence is often omitted from otherwise detailed loco descriptions. It seems a safe bet for 1421.
