Many, many years ago I travelled up the north east coast route in a DMU. The idea of seeing the route ahead was still a novelty. I was struck by how poorly some of the oil lit semaphores showed up on a misty, drizzly,dark day and my admiration for drivers increased accordingly. Fog, darkness, bad weather, drifting steam, no AWS. No picnic!
