There was until a couple of years ago a large ER blue enamelled sign at Mexborough just down the line from Wath saying LNER SPORTS AND ATHLETIC CLUB I had my eye on it but alas its gone.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Another one of Farringdon Street, and one of Fenchurch Street (Yes, I know it's LT&SR, but the GER used it too).

You're ok Malcolm as Fenchurch St was owned by the LNER - wasn't it?

Yes it was - and so proclaimed the façade below the clock.
Fenchurch Street was leased to the GER in 1866 for 999 years, so came into the possession of the LNER at Grouping. Malcolm's comment is a common misconception, possibly due to the increased activity of the LMS after remodelling in the mid 30s, but for a long time the LT&SR/MR/LMS only had use of platform 4 - which, I understand, was the only platform able to accommodate the longer bogie stock used on that line.
Platform 1 was for the Blackwall line until 1926; platform 2 for the Forest Gate, Ilford Romford, etc; platform 3 for Leyton, Woodford, Loughton, Epping & Ongar etc, and platform 5, the bay, for North Woolwich, Custom House, et al. After remodelling I believe the old platform five services moved to platform one.

He's not the driver. He's an ex driver enjoying the new fangled Old Age Pension who has come back to pose on a loco for the camera. The original photo was published in the Great Central Magazine in about 1910-12. That picture was in LNER Reflections, a book which I can thoroughly recommend. The retired driver is Joshua Slowen who was apparently something of a G C celebrity at the time and died shortly afterwards.

I get a lot of photos sent to me from friends all around the world who know I am a keen railway historian and collector of images. It takes a while to sort through them, and a lot them are of poor quality or very small (I don't tell them that as I don't wish them to stop sending me the pictures). However, sometimes small gems stand out and are well worth keeping in my opinion.
