Re: SWT job losses
Just been announced that the Chairman of SWT has been given the heave-ho with Brian Souter of Stagecoach now overseeing his responsibilities - interesting times, indeed...
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!
Re: SWT job losses
Perhaps a whiff of panic at SWT chaps!! Article in The Times last week discussing the problems facing TOCs (sniff sniff!). SWT and NXEC are evidently in difficult positions having agreed large and challenging repayment figures for their franchises and now of course the business model has been, shall we say, derailed. As they are in the early days of their franchise they are not eligible yet to qualify for the emergency financial support collar which kicks in later in some of the franchises, eg some of First Group's franchises. Oh dear. Government bailout anyone?? Though I do feel sorry for the ordinary staff in all of this the thing that annoys me is the bleating of these people now, contrasted with their arrogance a short time ago. Hubris!
I wonder also about the security of already planned future investment in the railways. Cut backs in planned programmes are reportedly occurring -by stealth- in other sectors such as the rebuilding programmes in health and education and the Royal Navy's programme for two aircraft carriers has been further delayed, even though it would provide much needed work in the engineering industry.
