Helmsley Railway station?

Post by ReptilianFeline »

I'm looking into possible stations to use as a template for my model railway, and stumbled across Helmsley. Does anyone have any track plan or similar for that station? Preferable from the time of WW2. Any photos would be nice too. I'm looking at the Disused stations website, and am trying to picture it in my head, but any info you have, would be appreciated.

A 25inch OS map is available on the website of the National Library of Scotland. It may be of use even though it is the 1912 edition.

Thank you for leading me to the Scottish library. I didn't expect maps like that to be available to me here in Sweden.

Here's an extract from the 1912 edition of the Ordnance Survey Map showing Helmsley Station. The National Library of Scotland's terms of use apply. I've also attached an image of the station from an old postcard.
The North Eastern Railway Association https://ner.org.uk/ has quite a few photos of the station, taken in the 1960s, within the P. Howat collection and also holds some plans and documents relating to the station.

There's some useful stuff at

including a track diagram from 1951.

Went looking on Google Maps, trying to picture where that map plan was in Helmsley - the town has been built up a lot now. Not surprising as the diagram is a century old, but the saw mill is still there!

It is worth a visit. Even the signal box still exists and there is a track layout diagram posted on a notice board nearby.

Thank you so much for the links and pictures. You've all been very helpful.

I have a main line station built from a Metcalfe kit. I built it years ago. If I make some changes to it, it will look kind of like the Helmsley station house. If anyone think it's too grand for a smaller line, I'll just point them to Helmsley. :D

I wish I could go and visit, but I doubt it will happen... at least for a few years.

I have just stumbled across an A4 size Track & Signalling plan from 1920 courtesy of the NERA.
If you PM me I can scan it and send by email

I have an old map of the lines before the Railway mania crash around 1850.
It shows a branch to Helmsley from Gilling on the later restricted route Thirsk and Matlon planned to Bedale and Hawes and Brough. The former was built with cost cutter buildings and Gilling to Pickering.
It would have joined the Wensleydale at Leeming Lane, which may explain the grandiose of this station...
Of course, GT Andrews would have made a fine station for Helmsley, wonder if the proposals survive?
This has all been ratified on research as fact!
