LNER owned dredgers on the Humber.
Hi all, New to this Forum but hope someone can help, My late Grandfather was skipper of an LNER owned dredger that worked the river Humber. His name was Wilfred Tunnacliffe, I've been told that photographs of him have appeared from time to time aboard the vessel, I'd quite like to track some down and thought this might be a good place to start, Regards, Mike.

Mike,
I haven't seen many pictures at all of LNER owned dredgers, but here is one I have.

Re: LNER owned dredgers on the Humber.
I'm afraid I can't help with any photos but I will be on the look out.
I have a question - was your grandfather based in Hull or Immingham/Grimsby? There were dredgers on both sides of the river, the one (or more) based at Immingham had been purchased by the Great Central Railway. I don't know if there was any rationalisation by the LNER, but I can imagine that there was plenty of work to keep several busy.

Hi, As my Grandfather lived in Hull I can only assume he was based on the North side of the river. There was apparently a picture that appeared some years ago in a paper, showing a dredger alongside a jetty with the skipper in a cap leaning out of a window, A friend of the family (Now passed away) who saw the picture was quite confident that it showed my Grandfather, As both my parents are now in their 70's and photo's are not available I am keen to trace what info' I can, Regards, Mike

Thanks Malcolm, I think the picture is of an earlier vessel though I may be wrong. I believe my Grandfather was a skipper after WW2, I've seen pictures of him aboard a battleship (HMS Hood I think) during the pre war years. Will have to ask my Mother as details are now sketchy.
Regards, Mike.
