A3 locomotives in black

i am building an "0"guage A3 locomotive but so is everyone else and all probably in green.my question is were they ever in black if so not being a steam person but getting there, can someone point me in the right direction.many thanks

Short answer yes- During WWII. Plain black with no lining, and only 'N E' on the tender rather than the full LNER. Number on cab as usual. It took a short while for them to regain green livery after 2nd world war.

did any of them have the tender corridor during the war yrs and also interested in numbers and names-ie- were they taken of the loco or kept on.thanks.

Corridor Tenders shown in RCTS are:-

nil last to have one was 2750 until 09/1937

no mention of names or numbers being removed on any loco , never heard of that ever happening?

Some locos still has LNER on tender in Black others depending on date NE If you have a particular loco in mind i can look further

On the subject of the Tender lettering, Yeadons doesn't have a list in Vol2, but in Vol1 (A4/W1) it has the full paint list, and most had LNER before being shortened to NE, and some had the L&R put back, before the Garter Blue Going back on!

For variety, another option would be "BR Express Blue" (the same colour as A4 Sir Nigel Gresley is in today). It is a little darker than the garter blue of "Mallard".
The A3s were painted this in early BR days before "BR Green" was chosen for express locos.

I think it is a smart livery that suits the Gresley A3s, A4s, and Peppercorn A1s. (looks ugly on a GWR King, though!).

That's why they went Green, Blue didn't suit the GWR!

thanks to u all for your replys.as u can guess by now i'm building an "o"gauge kit of the flying scotsman and being a diesel man(steady)dont know a lot about this subject.so i need to know what colours she wore and if the tender had a corridor from the outset and if not when and a rough idea of dates?.any books or mags that i can buy would be of help.everyone is doing it in green so i wish to be different if poss.any info will be brilliant.thanks lleckey

Volume 2A of the RCTS "Locomotives of the LNER" (sometimes known as the "greenies", because of the cover colour) will answer pretty much all your questions on the A1/A3.

A good complement to the RCTS books for modelling, are the "Yeadon's Registers". These have less text and history but more pictures. The pair go together very well.

I think the A1s and A3s are in Volume 1.
The Registers are still being published. They're upto 40-something and look likely to pass 50.
