Speed Restrictions

Post by mojo36 »

Were there permanent or temporary speed restrictions through Peterboro station in the 1937 period?
If so what were the reasons and when were they altered?

Permanent speed restrictions due to curves. I believe it was 1973 before the track layout was significantly revised to improve matters. (Taking a chance that it's the GN origin station.)

Thanks for the responses.

North station mainline.
I think that I have seen somewhere that it was 10 mph. If correct it seems very low.

If you look at the splendid thread for 'Peterborough North' on RMWeb, ....here.... you will find not a lovely model railway, but plenty of other information.

On the first page Gilbert suggests that there was a permanent 20mph restriction through the station.

'A permanent speed restriction of 20mph in each direction had therefore bedevilled ECML trains there until after a saga of prevarications which lasted through three generations. Then in 1973 new lines were built at long last to provide a high-speed alignment'

Thanks for the input, looking at the track plan I can see why they had the restrictions.
