quin-arts ????
can any one tell me if there were any quin- arts built ,im sure i can remember seeing one with a quad-art likely on a day trip passing s gosforth east junction heading towards benton possibly late 50s- early 60s .
also where would the passengers originated from as they were probably not local based stock, and would not have come a great distance with no comfort facilties!!

There were quint sets which worked on the GER suburban services out of Liverpool St. On summer weekends they, and other London suburban stock, was distributed to other cities for use on excursions. The train you saw was unlikely to have started much more than 20 or 30 miles away.third-rail wrote:can any one tell me if there were any quin- arts built ,im sure i can remember seeing one with a quad-art likely on a day trip passing s gosforth east junction heading towards benton possibly late 50s- early 60s .

Plenty of twins, some resident in the North East. Triplets in the Silver Jubilee sets, restaurant sets, but most were made up of ex GN six wheeled bodies.third-rail wrote: thanks for the info, was there any other stock similar eiter twins/triple, or even sixes built

thanks bill for that info ,would not have thought it worthwhile to haul two sets of arts 200 mile for a 60 mile trip then 200 mile back home

Re: quin-arts ????
I would doubt it was just one trip, probably 3 or 4 round trips on each of the Saturday and Sunday. It's the sort of thing that would only have happened on exceptionally busy weekends, such as the Miner's Gala.third-rail wrote:thanks bill for that info ,would not have thought it worthwhile to haul two sets of arts 200 mile for a 60 mile trip then 200 mile back home

Are you sure? By that time the GE was part of the Eastern Region, based in Liverpool St and the NE was part of the, errr, North Eastern Region based in York with two separate 'Coaching Stock' offices - if I were at the former, I would be very reluctant to release sets such as quints for the weekend after the Friday evening peak to another region in case they weren't returned in time for the morning peak on the Tuesday, or whatever. Could it have been that these vehicles were surplus following an electrification scheme - Chingford or something like that? Seems an awful long way to work ECS even by the easy going, non business case led outfit that was BR in those days. Delighted to hear it did happen and be proved wrong, mind - what way would they have travelled - the GN/GE Joint or via the NLL and down the East Coast also weren't the quints Westinghouse braked only which would put them at a distinct disadvantage when worked off the GE?Bill Bedford wrote:There were quint sets which worked on the GER suburban services out of Liverpool St. On summer weekends they, and other London suburban stock, was distributed to other cities for use on excursions. A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

Re: quin-arts ????
November 1960 was when they electrified to Chingford and I am almost certain the Quints were Wessie only and the Quadarts were vacuum only. Certainly around that time, BR were struggling to find any decent Westinghouse braked locos - they were all worn out. A bit of a mystery, then ?

Re: quin-arts ????
Since it would have been impossible to run a quint, which had Westinghouse brakes, which had vacuum brake in the same train, I suggest what you saw was a four and a five car non-corridor set. Both would have been available in the North East and both were likely to have had twins in the makeup.third-rail wrote:the sets i saw were together a 5 & 4 .hq1hitchin wrote:November 1960 was when they electrified to Chingford and I am almost certain the Quints were Wessie only and the Quadarts were vacuum only.
