Cemetery building Belle Isle

Post by Tim Watson »

First ever photo view of the front of this building in this film clip. We have only been looking for this for 37 years - however it doesn’t show any detail...

It's in the opening sequence, the titles are over the top of it.

A very plain building, always thought the access was from where the camera was positioned but it's obviously the other end.

The access gate pillars are visible at the very beginning, at the south end.

So they are, I presume the access is to the railway side of the building as there looks to be nothing on the rear.

I must look at Martin Dawes book again to referesh my memory

Dave S,
IIRC the 'other side' was where the one or two platforms had been, but were demolished with the east side widening of the main line below.

At some time, probably during 1965, I had to update a survey and produce drawings in connection with some drainage works at that very location. I cannot recall the details now but there was a deep-level main drain or sewer that crossed at a slight diagonal below the tracks and it may have been that to which a new connection was required. Nothing to do with the Cemetery station other than the same location... and its proximity to the plague pit?
